Short Summary

My name is Kim and I grew up in the sunny city of East London, South Africa. For a long as I can remember, I have always had cats around me. And not one was ever chosen by me. All were strays that somehow found their way to my door. It was as if I was in their radar as "potential help"!! Naturally, I'd help them all...

I've always dreamed of helping animals in some way, and recently it became apparent to me where I need to begin. My cat had kittens and being so young and a first time mother, she just didn't have that much success feeding them. I had to help with formula feeds to supplement their milk intake. In the time that they were being fed, 2 small, week old kittens that had been found on the roadside were brought to me to feed along with my cats kittens.  In jest one evening it was said that I should start a cat sanctuary...And upon looking around, it appeared as I already had one going!!

Being an alternate at heart, I envision my cat houses being completely self-sustaining. I have plans for building solar panels and wind turbines, which will power the lighting, heating and cooling in each cat house. In addition, each cat house will have its own hot running water.

By starting this fundraiser, I hope to raise the funds quickly so that I can secure the property for the sanctuary, as well as build the first 3 of the cat houses, plus a smaller house for storage.

A bit more detail...

The funds generated in this fundraiser will go towards securing the small holding on which the sancuary will be run on, as well as the materials to start putting together the custom made Wendy houses for the cat houses. Each unit will be completely self-contained. Each having its own lighting and hot running water, including heating for winter and cooling for summer. The funds will also go towards sufficient supplied to feed and house the cats.

Before I am misunderstood, when I say Wendy houses, I don't mean your childhood Wendy house your parents could hardly fit into. The houses will be based on that type of Wendy house, however being custom built they will be able to fit us taller people standing inside them. The lighting, heating and cooling will be powered using a wind turbine, and the water will be heated by means of solar panels. Each unit will also have its own small water capture system.

The Impact

In opening this sanctuary, I am hoping to alleviate the pressure of an over populated pet system. Unsterilized strays and abandoned cats contribute to a large problem in the population of cats on the streets. I want to help ease those numbers by including a sterilization program for all the cats brought into the sanctuary.

Risks & challenges

There are a great many risks in taking on the responsibility of caring for possibly a great many cats. Feeding them, litter boxes, adequate medical care should any get injured or ill, etc. There are a number of things tht could pose hiccups along the way. However, while I am still building the houses and making the space ready to start taking in cats, I am going around looking for more permanent solutions in the form of sponsors, donors, or the like who want to take on a permanent interest in the sanctuary.
