Bright Eyes Centre for Visually Impaired Young Children is an early intervention, stimulation, therapy and care centre based in Durban. We are a non profit organisation working to improve the quality of life of visually impaired children. We work with families from all walks of life and are actively involved in uplifting our community through outreach projects.
Prior to March 2017 we were funded by a larger business, we now have to fend for ourselves.Although we are doing our best to raise the money needed we have realised that we desperately need the support of our community to make this dream a reality.
The needs of our visually impaired little ones on the playground are unique and it will benefit our little ones greatly if we were able to replace our well loved jungle gym with a new, specially designed and adapted play system. Our little ones need to be able to explore safely and many of the standard features of ordinary jungle gyms just won't do. We need slides with raised sides, bold colours, low railings and textured surfaces to name but a few. These are things we as sighted people take for granted.
We often host groups that are from disadvantaged communities and they too would benefit greatly from the additional play space.
Another challenge is that we do not have enough shaded space on the playground for our little ones to play either. For our light sensitive children this is especially challenging as playing outside becomes a stressful experience. Summertime in Durban means rain and an awning would not only offer shelter from the summer sun but protection from the rain too!
This jungle gym will not only benefit our children but help us help ourselves by allowing us to generate an income as well as provide employment to one of our many unemployed mothers. Many of the families at Bright Eyes cannot afford the already nominal fee of R400 per month and we don't turn anyone away. We are not prepared to sacrifice the excellent staff to children ratios nor the standard of care and thus, our expenses will almost always exceed our income.
Visually impaired little ones need to be allowed the freedom to explore in order to learn new things, little ones don't explore if they don't feel safe. Please help us create a safe place to play and a little more financial security for our centre.
We hope to see you for coffee soon!
PS: We are currently baking muffins to raise funds for this project. We have been running the muffin campaign for 3 months and have managed to raise R5000. We need to sell 18000 more muffins to make this dream a reality. So, if you can't donate, please give us a call and order some muffins. xxx
PPS: We are a registered NPO/PBO and are able to provide a Section 18A receipt upon request.

No job can feel as rewarding as what you guys are doing. You as the staff should be so proud that you are making a real difference in the lives of these kids. Wish you guys all the best in your fundraising. I'll be sure to spread the word about it.
