Bridge Project Kenya

My name is Dorry Aben.  Last May of 2012 I traveled to Kenya to volunteer. There I worked both in an orphanage and in a school.

In the area of Kinangop, where I worked, the roads are dirt roads and the landscape forms into unpredictable shapes because of the heavy rains that fall constantly in the region.

For school children, the route they travel by foot to and from school is unsafe, and I experienced firsthand how this predicament cost a five-year old student his life. He fell into a stream of water created by the rain and drowned. 

This tragic event which occurs all too frequently, woke me up and made me realize that something had to be done.  So I spoke with the head of the school and together we set up the 'Bridge Project Kenya.' 

We seek to create a safe pathway to school and build a bridge so that something like this would never happen again. The community of Kinangop tried to collect as much money as they could  and I made a commitment to try and raise the necessary remaining funding that they lacked. The budget for the whole project is $6,448.00 and the community of Kinangop managed to collect $3,517.
