Wider context

Cracids are the most threatened bird family in the Americas, but are still understudied. Despite their central role as seed dispersers, their ecological importance is often not recognized. In the Brazilian Pantanal, they thrive and offer a unique opportunity for research. Using non-invasive methods such as camera traps, bioacoustics and direct observation, we are trying to close some important knowledge gaps.

Who am I?

My name is Martin Senič. I am a research and teaching assistant at the University of Primorska (UP), Department of Biodiversity in Slovenia, and I collaborate with the Computational Bioacoustics Research Unit at the University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) in Brazil. Currently, much of my work is focused on the study of cracids in the Brazilian Pantanal as part of my PhD project, which is part of a broader long-term project on the assessment of local cracids.

Why fundraising?

During our fieldwork in 2023, we realized that we need to update our equipment to improve the quality of our research results before we return to the field in July 2024. This fundraising campaign aims to raise funds for new and reliable equipment that can withstand the extreme environmental conditions in our study area, focusing in particular on the purchase of high quality camera traps. We also want to cover other necessary expenses for carrying out our planned field work, such as batteries for the cameras. In addition to this fundraiser, I am actively seeking funds through various grants and other funding opportunities. I will transparently disclose any grant or donation I receive outside of this fundraiser, name the granting organization or donor, and deduct the amount received from the final goal stated in this campaign.

More information

For more information about our recent work on cracids, see the video (which gives an overview of the work done in 2023) or my Linktree profile, where you can find some research articles and contacts (if you want to learn more about this topic directly from me).

Some additional explanations of the most important expenses

This research is being conducted under extreme conditions, which present some logistical and financial challenges. The most important of these are the cost of:
- Good equipment costs more, but can withstand the harsh conditions. The cost of data collection is high, and better equipment means that every field trip counts.
- Safety in the field is critical, but also costly. You must never go into the field alone, because it could be dangerous for several reasons. For example. You can get sick from the heat. A minor accident could prevent you from getting home before dark. You are safer from animals such as jaguars and pumas if you are not out alone.
- Good batteries are essential to keep camera traps and other equipment working for as long as possible and to optimize your field work.
- Other costs associated with long fieldwork, such as gasoline, food, medicine and other expenses, should not be neglected either.

Why your support is cruital?

Your support is critical to improving our research efforts and understanding this highly threatened bird family. It will also contribute to better planning for their future research and conservation. Donate today and help us make a difference!

Rewards

Power one camera for a month

With your generous donation, you will become a POWER SUPPORTER and enable one of our camera traps to remain active for at least a month, capturing thousands of priceless images that are essential to our research work. As a token of our appreciation, each supporter will receive a heartfelt thank you note as well as an exclusive invitation to our closed WhatsApp group. In this group, I will keep you up to date during my field research from July to September 2024. You will get first-hand insights into the highlights, stories and quick updates on the final results as they unfold. If you would like to join us on this journey, please leave your email address so I can send you the invitation details promptly. Your support is critical to our cause, and I look forward to sharing this adventure with you.

Buy and place "your own" camera

With this donation, you will take on the role of a SPECIAL SUPPORTER that will significantly improve our current equipment capabilities and thus increase the quality of our research. The camera will be placed at one of the sampling locations. As a token of gratitude, each supporter will receive a personalized thank you note and the camera purchased with your donation will bear your name, regardless of whether you are an individual or a company. I will inform you directly about the highlights captured with your camera. Your generosity will also be publicized on my social media profiles and in my newsletters. Just like our Power supporters mentioned above, each Special supporter will receive an exclusive invitation to join our closed WhatsApp group. Please do not forget to leave your personal details at the end, including your email address, so that I can get in touch with you promptly. Your contribution is invaluable to us and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.
