Braving the Shave for Cancer

Dear readers, thank you for looking at my page.

I am Deborah, a final year medical student and this is about cancer and all those battling with this deadly disease. As a medical student, I encounter patients battling with cancer everyday in the wards; Breast cancer, Colon carcinomas, Brain tumors, and many more. Only God knows the pain that they go through everyday. Not being able to live the life that they once had, do the things that they like and having to have a caretaker by their side all the time to help them with their daily living activities. And worse, undergoing various extensive treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgeries which involves removing the affected organs, just to extend their lives a little bit more to be with their loved ones. Only to find months/years later, that the cancer has spread to other organs.

Apart from the mental and physical pain that cancer brings, they have to deal with the long list of side effects that comes with treatment. Some of the side effects include hair loss, loss of appetite and weight, bone problems, diarrhoea, vomiting, easily falling sick and the list goes on. The thing is, cancer is curable if it is detected early. Many times, patients come in early but do not have enough money for their expensive cancer treatment causing them to default their treatment.

So, in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am going to shave my head and donate my hair to Locks of Hope where they would make natural wigs out of donated hair for patients who lose their hair with treatment especially children and women. By shaving my head, I may not get to feel the excruating pain of cancer physically but I would be creating awareness and be able to raise some funds to meet the needs of these patients. I would like you to support me with this cause by donating to help with treatment bills for those who can't afford to pay for them. A little help goes a long way. All donated money will go to patients who can't afford treatment through various organizations.
