Brandon Taylor Support Fund

Update posted by Shannon Gilliam On Dec 13, 2015

Hello everyone! This message comes from Brandon! First off, I want to thank each and everyone of you for donating towards my recovery and keeping me in your thoughts. It is greatly appreciated!!! As the year comes to an end, I will be finishing up my last week at CNS. Next month, I will start a new program that focuses on physical therapy. A six month recovery has been my goal and I am hoping to be back to my old life in San Luis Obispo by March.

Thank you again for the support and I wish you all happy holidays and a happy new year.

This last week Brandon entered the next stage of recovery. He was discharged from Los Robles and is now attending CNS (Center for Neuro Skills) in Encino. There he will be going through an intensive program that will challenge him and push him to his recovery. Although, he is living in a beautiful house with other patients, he understandably would rather be home. The good news is we can take him out to eat and visit with him.

He is walking with a cane and had the peg tube removed from his stomach. His speaking has improved and he is essentially the same guy we all know and love.

We're looking forward to him showing off his progress as he moves along in the program. On behalf of the Taylor family, a big thank you goes out to everyone for the support at this difficult time. Keep checking back for updates.

It has been a month since the accident and Brandon just keeps improving every day. This last week he has been eating regular scheduled meals. A few of his requests have been In n Out and pizza. He is now talking up a storm and cracking jokes left and right. His silly, sarcastic humor that we all know and love is still there. His strength keeps on improving by doing a variety of exercises and activities.Unfortunately, he is seeing double when objects or people are close up. To help his eyes focus, he is wearing an eye patch that has to be switched from eye to eye throughout the day. He has a wonderful sense of humor about it and said he is a pirate for Halloween. His therapists have expressed their amazement of how far he has come. However, he still needs to take catnaps since he gets fatigued easily. Oh, almost forgot, he finally was able to have some iced coffee! We had to thicken it for him since liquids are still a little bit difficult for him to swallow.

Sept 21st Brandon is doing better and growing stronger each day. He is working very hard with his therapists because as he says "I want to go home". For dinner Brandon had his first regular meal with all the fixings after passing his swallow test performed earlier today. His Dad was able to trim his scruffy facial hair so he doesn't look like he just returned from a backpacking trip. I'm sure it feels a lot better since he has to wear the neck brace for at least another two weeks. Brandon's voice is becoming stronger each day and with that expresses his desires and concerns for his recovery. I have explained that with his hard work and commitment he will get there

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generous support so far. Every time I receive an email notification that Brandon received a donation, it is truly hard not to get a little emotional. As my mom has been very busy managing Brandon's care, I make sure to personally share all of the donations and thoughtful comments on this webpage with her; she is also very touched by all of your loving support and generosity.

Since my last visit with Brandon, we have all seen some incredible progress during these past two days. For the first time ever, Brandon was able to eat a small container of apple sauce which he even spoon fed himself! We just have to be patient since it will be a gradual process for him to be able to eat only solid foods and to drink liquids. He has also been communicating with us a lot more through his speech and facial expressions. He has improved greatly with his ability to walk with assistance as well as prove his physical strength through various exercises. Although he has told us that he wants to get in the car to go home, we keep reassuring Brandon that he will be going home soon, which might be in as little as two weeks. In the meantime, we know he is receiving the best care at this rehab facility through his various physical therapy sessions which are making him stronger both mentally and physically as each day goes by. Of course, he will continue to have physical training sessions at my parents' house and he will continue to need constant supervision from my parents and an at-home caregiver for his safety and wellbeing.

Although this is going to be a long healing process, we hope to continue to see his commitment and determination for a full recovery, especially since he personally requested for an iced coffee today :)

My husband Dan and I went to visit Brandon in the rehab center today along with my parents. For the past two days, he has been able to crunch on some ice chips that are being hand fed to him. Although he cannot communicate much, Brandon was able to verbally ask my dad for more ice chips. He has also been extremely energetic in his hospital bed as I am sure he wants to get up and walk, even though he is unable to yet without assistance. Since he slipped out of his bed and fell on the floor yesterday when left alone for a short time (thankfully, not further injuring himself), his doctor ordered for him to have a 24-7 nurse's aid for his entire stay at the rehab center. As it continues to be a long road ahead, my family and I truly appreciate all of your emotional and financial support. I will be visiting him again this Wednesday and I will be sure to post another update then.

A quick note regarding visitors - Because it is important that he gets plenty of rest, we have been encouraged by the rehab center to limit the number of visits. And the one day that he will be able to have visitors (only 2 people at once) is on Sundays only. However, my brother will likely benefit more from your visit later on down the road when he is transferred to my parents' house to continue his rehab. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my mom or me. Thank you so much for your understanding and keeping Brandon in your thoughts!
