In November 2014, a team of 14 students including myself will take part in an expedition to Borneo which is run by World Challenge! The expedition will allow us to experience the busy city life of Miri and Kota Kinabalu, life in a remote jungle village in the heart of Borneo, and a home stay in a traditional Muslim village on the banks of the Kinabatngan River. We will climb over 4,000m to watch the sunrise from the highest peak in Asia, sleep in hammocks in the remote Borneo jungle, collect seeds for a local nursery and shop in the bustling street markets of Sabah. The socioeconomic status of the residents is very low which allows for us to experience a way of life which is very different to ours in Australia. Our program very much involves working with the local community and wildlife. We will spend time on community projects in a village, at a local nursery and in an orphanage. As well as this our team has the opportunity to replant a rainforest, watch Probiscus Monkeys feed and visit the Orangutan Centre. No time will be spent in luxury hotels, day spas or dining at five star restaurants - and all that we have with us, we will be carrying on our backs. In order to be fit and healthy enough to do this we go on two training camps and are required to complete several different water safety activities. In preparation, we will take language/culture classes once a week. In total, I need to raise $4500 to attend this trip. Although on top of that I will need to purchase hiking gear! Parents are not encouraged to support us financially for this trip as it is trying to help us to become more independent. Every cent counts and I appreciate any donation made! It has been my dream to go on an expedition for so long and it would mean the world to me if you helped me along the way! Thank you!
