We find ourselves at a crossroads. No short-term national disaster would come close in comparison to a generation which has not read, yet it seems we are here.

As our public institutions suffer from lack of foresight and resources, so too is access to books becoming a thing of the past (especially for the most vulnerable in our society). Most of us still remember when our parents would drag us to public libraries, be they located in our educational institutions, the British Council, or those provided by local governments. The Ghana Library Board at the time for instance had the largest collection of Tintin comics in the country (one could argue even on the continent), access to a range of classics from local writers to international ones opened our minds and imaginations to the possibilities (a childhood necessity). Today the British Council Library is no more, the Ghana Library Board is virtually dead; a shadow of it's former self. It begs the questions; where can our kids go to read?

We all know how the story ends, no developing nation looking to compete globally can afford to have a generation that cannot/are not reading. Internet resources cannot be the solution, because as much as telecommunications has made major strides in Africa, we still rank lowest in terms of access to internet and digital devices.

It is time we get together to right this grave wrong. Join us as we look to reverse this longterm damage. Join us as we make Ghana read again, join us, as we bring access to the greatest reading materials for those with the least access to them. There is no doubt the impact such an effort will make for ours and our children's generation.

It costs approximately $10,000 to ship a 40ft container of books. The books are provided for free by Books for Africa (www.booksforafrica.org) a US-based organization. Books For Africa ships 40-foot containers holding approximately 22,000 English books. The books are donated, and are gently used or new (sorted in their various warehouses by volunteers across the US). They also supply refurbished computers and new encyclopedia sets at additional cost. Organizations like us are simply required to pay the shipping costs.

We intend on supporting the stocking of various public libraries across Ghana, the more donations we receive, the more libraries we can support, so please donate and let's get Ghana reading again!!
