On the book entitled Prelude to Brass Playing that Rafael Méndez wrote in collaboration with Edward Gibney, there are some tips that will pave your Road to Success. In creating this page to get funding for the e-book translation and design, we have been inspired by them
In 2011, thanks to the grant received from the Mexican National Fund for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA), Alejandra Rosas Olvera was able to write the biography of the great trumpet player Rafael Méndez. After four years of arduous research both in Mexico and the United States, it was finally published in June 2016.
Alejandra went on this quest with the objective to share not only Rafael Méndez’ biographical data, but also the historical and social context of his life in Mexico —his childhood took place during the Mexican Revolution— as well as in the United States as a Mexican immigrant. She also wanted to make a contribution about the importance of his legacy for trumpeters worldwide and to analyze how Mexican musicians were formed in the 20th century.
Since the book was published, Alejandra Rosas has made more than 30 presentations in important spaces like fairs, cultural venues, universities and some of the most important music festivals in Mexico, Guatemala and Peru. It has generated an interest in many other countries, so the author is constantly invited to perform at international music festivals.
Even though Rafael Méndez was not a relevant figure in Mexico, the main newspapers have published notes on this research and the author has been interviewed in several TV channels.
Thanks to the different presentations and through the Facebook page, the printed book in Spanish has been successfully sold and shipments have been made throughout Mexico, as well as to the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, the United States, Spain, France and Germany. To date, nearly 1,000 books have been sold.
Rafael developed his career in the United States and, at that time, he was considered the best trumpet player worldwide, it is a reference in the world of brass players. Since the publication came out, Alejandra has received countless requests for the text in English. She realized that it was necessary to have a digital version in English, so that it would be easy to distribute. Therefore, the translation work began in January 2019.
This new project is neither easy, nor free of charge. In a certain way, it means starting again. Translation of the text started in January 2019, and at present it is being proofread. The digital design is already taking place and the e-book is planned to be ready by mid-May, ready to reach anyone, anywhere in the world. But Alejandra needs your help to pay for expenses. What about giving her a hand?
We need your strength and are pretty sure that you will help us with this quest. Would you like to be among the first to get the e-book? How would you like to have the printed version in Spanish, too? Check the rewards we offer!
Thanks to the spaces in which it has been presented, Alejandra has been able to collect the impressions of this work from today's most important trumpeters, such as Arturo Sandoval, Wynton Marsalis, Pacho Flores, Rubén Simeó, Giuliano Summerhalder, Ramón Flores and Isidro Martínez, among others. All agree on the importance of the contribution from this research, since Rafael Méndez is a reference in the world of the trumpet.

"So far, it is the most comprehensive and easy-to-read biography on the figure of the great Rafael Méndez, not only as a trumpet player, but as a visionary, artist and professor. I hope he becomes a symbol of perseverance, of achievements thanks to the hard work. A very complete source of information." —Giuliano Sommerhalder
