In January 2013, Bonnie received a frantic phone message from her sister in Galloway, N.J. Her sister was being physically abused, strangled and held against her will by her fiance. This was an ongoing issue with them for 9 years. Bonnie went to her sister's aid as soon as she heard the voicemail. Bonnie took her legal handgun to protect herself and her family in the event that it may be needed. The gun was never pointed and the clips were not loaded. The Police were called by the fiance when HE felt threaten. Bonnie was arrested and later charged with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun and Unlawful Transportation of a Handgun. Despite the fact that Bonnie has never been in trouble with the law, has a clean record, and she herself felt threatened by the fiance, as well as fitting all the guidelines set forth by the N.J. State Attorney General, the Atlantic Prosecutor offered a plea deal of 3 years, serve 1 year, no early release in the N.J. Woman's State Prison. In December 2013 Bonnie accepted the plea deal with Right of Appeal, as an alternative to going to trial and possibly going to Prison for 10 or more years. In January 2014 Bonnie found an Attorney that was willing to find a new way. After months of court appearances and postponements Bonnie's sentencing was in August 2014. During this court preceding the Judge listened to Michael Schrieber's (Bonnie's Attorney) argument and case related findings. The Judge decided that the plea deal was too harsh for her case and he changed her sentence to 3 years probation and 275 days of Day Reporting. In the State of New Jersey a Judge cannot change a sentence without the permission of the Prosecutor. The Atlantic County Prosecutor is now appealing the Judge's ruling. This not only frustratres the Judges, but puts Bonnie in a waiting stage and is very costly to the taxpaying citizens of Atlantic County, N.J. and Bonnie's Family. This is where we are asking for your help. Any donation will go to the Legal Defense fees to help Bonnie and to change/alter the "Graves Act" Law in N.J. The change will allow our Judges more discretion when sentencing gun owners in N.J.  who otherwise have clean criminal records and no gang affiliations.
