Freshly cleaned clothes, something most of us take for granted.

Think what if feels like when you put on clean smelling and washed clothes everyday. The homeless do not have this luxury. We will change this by offering a FREE Laundry service to the homeless in South Africa.

Blue Sky Laundry offers a free mobile laundry service for the homeless in Pretoria South Africa.

The laundry-on-wheels service aims to give rough sleepers the basic human right to hygiene, and restore their dignity and respect. Ours is a new company that will provide a service that will wash and dry the clothes of the people in Pretoria that do not have the opportunity to do it themselves, the homeless.

Our goal is to connect communities, raise health standards for the homeless and improve their lives.

We will buy a truck, fit a couple of industrial washing machines and clothes dryers onto the back of a flat bed truck as well as an electrical generator and water tanks. The homeless on the street will then be able to let us wash and dry their clothes for them, without having to worry that any of their clothes going missing.

The laundry-on-wheels will be on site for three to six hours every day, doing up to 16 or 17 loads of washing and drying each day.

Once this business takes off, this service will be expanded to all the major cities and townships throughout South Africa.

To begin with, the laundry-on-wheels will pull up at parks and offer a free cloths washing and drying service to the homeless.

This service have been an enormous success in Australia, known as Orange Sky Laundry, and has grown in 18 months from one single service truck to more than seven cities across Australia to 46 locations.

This service will by no means the complete answer to the problem, but is a good start. We will be making use of volunteers from around South Africa to provide this service.

The funds required to get the first laundry-on-wheel going is South African R75 000. The funds will used to purchase truck, some washing machines, clothes dryers, an electrical generator and water tanks.

What will people do while their clothes are being washed?

The people waiting for their clothes to be washed and dried will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy a conversation with the volunteers providing the service. As this service expand, a mobile shower truck will be constructed to provide an opportunity to get a warm, clean shower. A food truck is also in the planning stage to provide a warm meal for the homeless.

We do this in hopes to help our friends on the street make gradual steps back into society.

What will people wear while their clothes are being washed?

Most of the people on the street have many sets of clothes but are usually very dirty given their limited access to washing facilities.

How many people’s clothes will we be able to wash?

We have two 10 kg washers and dryers that allow us to get 20 kg of clean washing out every hour. Additionally, linen bags and an efficient color co-ordination system will allow us to wash multiple people’s clothes at once and keep their belongings together.

What about power and water?

All our specially designed vans will include on-board clean and grey water storage, along with a power generator. The shower vans have solar power panels on the roof to help heat water.

Who is doing the washing?

The washers are automatically fed so there are no powders or toxic chemicals, therefore our volunteers simply load the linen bags and once clean, return the belongings to their owner.

When and where will you be operating?

Each service will have set locations and time at which they will operate. We will work with the local service providers to advertise in places with the highest level of need. For information on service locations in your local area send a message to [email protected]

How will we set up the laundry-on-wheels service in a public place?

The van will be run at well known, yet discreet locations across south Africa’s various other charitable service locations.

Where are we?

We will have our head quarters in Pretoria.

How can you help?

You can start by donation money to this crowd funding site. Any money will help, and the sooner we reach our goal of South African R75 000, we will be able to start the service.
