Setting up a Secret Fundraiser for a Loved One

When a loved one is in need, with so much on their mind they might have not thought about creating an on-line fundraiser.

As touched on in this post, creating a surprise fundraiser is an absolutely amazing thing that you can do for a family or friend in need. Imagine the weight being lifted from a loved ones shoulders when they realize that problems they thought they had simply aren’t there anymore. And that is just one benefit of creating an on-line fundraiser, the messages of love and support one receives can be life changing.

A fundraiser that was started in secret on our site and changed the life of Carmen still makes us smile. Here’s one of her comments to us when she realized what friends and family had done for her:

“It has truly been an incredibly humbling experience to see friends, acquaintances, and even complete strangers come forth in such an amazing show of support. I have the absolute greatest system of friends and family who insisted upon doing this, and I wasn’t about to get in their way!  I cannot believe how generous people are…. PLEASE feel free to brag about the fact that YOU (And the rest of the crew at GoGetFunding) first-handedly made a life-changing difference for me. I don’t know where I’d be or what I would do without people like you. :)”

If you want to create a fundraiser in complete secrecy, you need a slightly different strategy to traditional crowdfunding methods.

For example, don’t share the page on social network sites. Instead share the link via personal email so there’s no chance the party being fund-raised for will find out. In addition, explain to donors why it needs to be kept a secret, where the money is going and  what date it will be deposited into the account of the beneficiary. For reassurance, we recommend funds should be directed into the account of someone closely connected to the beneficiary.

So that everyone can be involved in the secret, tell everyone when the beneficiary will be told of the campaign. You could even consider hosting a surprise party or event for the big ‘reveal’. If you prefer something a little quieter, you could make a video of the announcement and post it as an update -a heart-warming video of the announcement and reaction is bound to make others want to be a part of the fundraiser.

Don’t forget to enable ‘overfunding’ on your campaign too, so that you can continue to receive donations even when you surpass the fundraising target.

So the next time you see a loved one that could use a helping hand, get your crowd involved and start an online fundraiser to make something magical happen! And don’t forget to tell us all about it, we’d love to feature these amazing stories on on our blog.
