Community fundraising can be an incredible experience for all involved, particularly as communities are becoming more fragmented and less connected.

We have looked at some of the best ways to maximise the resources that are already on your doorstep and use more unusual methods to get those donations rolling in.

So how do you create a fundraiser for your community?

Do your research.

If the amount you need is huge, approach your local council, there may be grants or subsidies for part of the cost, which not only means you have less money to raise, but if you have secured part of the funds, donors are more inclined to get involved too.

Create a fantastic fundraiser page

We have a number of articles specifically designed to help fundraisers make their fundraiser page as appealing and professional as possible. If you need any specific guidance, don’t be afraid to reach out to our support team who are always on hand to offer coaching and advice.

Let your community buy it for you.

This is a great tactic, especially for businesses: If you want to raise money for a new playground, find out the cost for benches, swings, fencing, slides, bins etc and ask businesses to donate the equivalent for one of these items in exchange for their company logo to be erected on a ‘thank you’ board, or ‘recognition’ plaques to be added to the specific item they funded. Local and national businesses love this, as do youth teams, community groups and some local individuals.

Make sure you put the fun into fundraising – but check costs

Having sponsored events, community-based events, fun days, dinners etc is a fantastic way to present investment opportunities to businesses and other organisations. These events help raise awareness, recruit volunteers and solicit donations both large and small, but make sure the cost of hosting the event does not swallow up your hard earned donations.

Make the most of your local media

Radio stations, local newspapers and even some local news channels love to feature community fundraisers, so don’t be shy. Be loud, be proud and make sure they hear you!

Don’t forget to reach out to other community groups

Just because they may not be involved in your project, their community spirit and drive may not only provide donations, but may give you some valuable hints and tips for fundraising in your area. Churches and service groups are two great examples.

It’s not all about the money

If you are offered free or greatly discounted services instead of money, don’t turn it down. Even if you don’t require their services, just think how much you could raise if you auctioned their services instead. Imagine three hours with a financial advisor or solicitor, a free carpet clean, free music lessons, a free haircut. In terms of money they cost nothing, but at auction they are guaranteed to bring in the donations!

A lasting legacy

There is more than money that can be achieved from community fundraising. Take a look at all of the other things your community gains:

Raised public awareness

Stronger links with local businesses

Change enabled by empowering your community

A discovery of resources that your community may not have been aware of

An involved younger generation to help them have a sense of pride in their achievement and community

Improved relationships within the community regardless of background

And of course, the community have something lasting that you and they have worked hard to achieve.
