Trying to obtain funds for a creative venture can seem like an uphill battle, no matter how talented you are. Realistically, the chances of ‘being discovered’ and soaring into stardom are very slim.

But all is not lost!

Talent, hard work and determination are three basic elements you need, but it is often financial support or backing that helps provide keys to some of the doors that need opening.

Having money  means you are able to network your idea,  able to advertise, able to travel. You can buy materials and equipment or hire venues to be able to showcase your talent, or most importantly can relax knowing living costs are covered while you study, perform or create.

Many arts or music councils offer grants, subsidies, residencies or even technical assistance to those in these fields, but there are usually very strict conditions. Additionally, every year applications well exceed the budget they have.

The same is true for private individuals or companies who may offer internships or free studio space and or time, in exchange for future successes. Again, this can be an extremely competitive avenue, particularly if the individual or company are high profile.

For this very reason crowdfunding has become an excellent platform to showcase skills and raise funds.

It is not unknown for artists to use crowdfunding platforms as a window into their portfolio. There are even opportunities to offer original artwork, bespoke songs and more as rewards and incentives to donate.

So how do you use a crowdfunding platform to help fund your creative venture?

Firstly, consider your fundraiser page to be your chance to wow! If you are a musician, actor or dancer for example, your priority should be to get a great video on your page showing everyone who you are and exactly why they should donate.

If you are an artist in any field, good quality photographs are a must.

Rewards should definitely be considered, but ensure you are not going to be out of pocket. If you are a jewellery maker, artist or potter for example you can offer pieces of your original artwork in exchange for tiered donations.

If you are a musician, what about a personalised song? We have even had musicians offering free downloads of their songs as rewards. It’s not just about getting cold hard cash, but about getting additional exposure for your work.

If you have a website, blog or professional social media account, make sure you link it to your website. This is incredibly important as there may be those who do not wish to donate, but actually want to commission work, or offer collaboration. You can even embed your fundraiser into your website too.

Be really clear about why you need the money and how you intend to spend it. Saying ‘I need $10,000 to be able to live while I fulfil my dream to paint’ is too vague.

Saying ‘After recently completing a degree in x, I have found a studio which I would share with other artists. It will cost x per month. This combined with the materials I need comes to x for the first year. This is a truly unique opportunity to make the transition from student to artist… I will be keeping everyone updated with my progress through my blog’

The second version, is more informed, has a clearer intentions, and is offering transparency (blog updates).

Spreading the word can seem daunting. You may be thinking that there are so many more worthy causes out there that you don’t stand a chance. Truth is, there are very many people who have a particular affection and deep appreciation for creativity and want to help nurture talent. If they don’t know about you then you could miss opportunities.

If your creative venture is ready, but waiting,  an on-line fundraiser could help make your creative dream a reality, today.
