Creating An Online Legal Defense Fund – The Reasons Why

At GoGetFunding, we’ve seen many campaigns to help individuals raise money for legal defense or legal fees.

And these campaigns have more often than not, done exceptionally well. Lets take the Marissa Alexander Freedom Fundraiser for example.

At the time of writing, the campaign has raised US$61,613.83 from 1,211 donors. This smashed their original target, proving just how much friends, family and the wider public cared about this campaign.

Legal defense funds receive such a great response for many reasons. Most notably, the consequences of not being adequately defended are dire. In the case of Marissa, without the crowdfunded legal support she received, she was facing 60 years in jail.

As with many of our most popular campaigns, Marissa’s campaign was created by her friends and family and as can be seen, the simple step of creating a campaign has prevented a devastating and lifelong change to the lives of not only Marissa, but her children too.

The person directly affected is often in such uncharted territory that they simply don’t think of creating a campaign for themselves. However, that’s a great opportunity for friends and family to step in. Just make sure you get permission before you do so and nothing that you reveal is restricted information according to the courts.

What’s also important is that you lay out all the facts, link to any press that the case might have already had and post regular updates. Those are all factors that will help increase exposure not only for your campaign but the case too.

As the case evolves, it’s likely that the campaign will receive further press. For campaigns such as Marissa’s, we will help by sending press releases to our contacts in the media to help it get even more exposure (one of the ways we’re different from crowdfunding sites). If it gets picked up by the media, not only is the campaign likely to get more donations, but the actual case is likely to come under more intense scrutiny from independent parties – which is almost always a good thing.

Be sure to update the campaign with these stories so existing donors are kept in the loop and new donors know exactly what’s going on. Sometimes you may get press but be unaware of it if you’re not contacted directly. To help prevent that, we recommend setting up Google alerts (free). Simply set the alerts to email you every time something is published on the web that mentions key phrases related to your case.

That could be your name (if it’s uncommon) or something the case is directly related to. For example, a particular law that you know may be discussed.

So, if you or a loved one is facing a legal battle rest assured that crowdfunding is a proven way to help meet those expenses. Few causes stir as much emotion as legal battles.
