Campaign Story
Typhoon Odette, the strongest storm to hit the Philippines this year, has tragically devastated the Island of Siargao and left many of its 140,000 residents without shelter. Siargao was the first area to be hit by Odette on Thursday 16th December. Local authorities say 95% of the island has been severely damaged by the unexpected and out-of-season storm.
The local community urgently need your help. They currently have no access to water, food, emergency medication or electricity (making communication extremely difficult). Resources were already depleted due to the island’s reliance on tourism for income.
We at Espoir School of Life finally managed to make contact with the local community when our principal took a boat from the island to deliver a letter, attached to this post. We were devastated to learn 15 people were injured and one brave parent passed away when trying to rescue many of our students as the ceilings collapsed. The school buildings & facilities were severely damaged, with the roofs and ceilings collapsed or blown away. The school’s personnel and students are safe.
Espoir School of Life is an NGO providing free education and life skills to underprivileged children. The school has 100 students aged 4 to 9. The local community of 480 people, whose homes were flooded or destroyed, have relied on Espoir’s campus as an evacuation centre.
Espoir needs your generosity to urgently rebuild its classroom buildings (a total of 9 buildings: 7 classrooms, 1 canteen, and one meeting room), as well as provide emergency assistance (food & medication) to the local community of 480 people whom are fully reliant on us for help.
The funds will be used as follows:
- Repair all the buildings: USD 30k.
- Buy equipment (tables, chairs, printers, computers.) : USD 10k.
- Food for our students and the community for 1 month : USD 10k.
