Campaign Story
My name is Abi/Faye, the only child of Allan and Susan Rata. Our lives dramatically changed when Mama was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer last 2018.
Those who know Mama could attest to her kindness and generosity. She is a loving and compassionate soul who always gives selflessly. She’d always tell me how blessed we are, and how we should always share what we have with others. Mama finds joy in cooking, and entertaining. She remembers special occasions and would always prepare for them. Growing up, our household would often be the venue for parties and celebrations. She just loves making other people happy!
Her first MRI result last 2018 showed a devastating 4.24 cm tumor in her lung. Stage 4 meant that cancer has spread. Seen scattered across her brain was a multitude of small masses, the biggest one sits at the right side, measuring 4 cm as well. Dr. Gap Legaspi, the Neurologist, said, “Metastasis ang mga ito. Naiintindihan niyo naman ang ibig sabihin kapag sinabing nagmetastesize na? It means nasa late stage na ang cancer mo.” Mama was given an estimated six months to live. Dr. Legaspi advised an operation ASAP. Mama was then brought to PGH on the 28th of May 2018, a day after my birthday, and was operated on the 30th of May. Thankfully, the operation was successful. To help us with our journey, Dr. Legaspi referred us to an Oncologist, Dr. Jorge Ignacio, who was very warm and optimistic. He immediately prescribed an oral chemo medicine (i.e. Afatinib 40mg) which costs Php 2,635.71 per tablet every day.
By the end of 2018, the doctors already saw favourable changes; the tumor in her lung shrunk by half. Some of the growth in her brain seemed to have magically disappeared. It was a miracle for Mama and us. However, while oral chemo did wonders, Mama’s body also revolted when she started having blisters all over her body – her back, legs, thighs, fingers, toes. Some as big as a 10-peso coin, and some even bigger. Mama embraced her suffering and continued with the medication. She followed a strict, and healthy diet. She glowed despite her sickness. 2019 brought us more good news: tumors continue to get smaller and smaller! But very quickly, our joy was crushed when January 2020 results came out - one of the tumors doubled in growth. The pandemic also struck at the most inconvenient time, for all of Mama’s routine tests and check-ups were put to a halt. Before 2020 ended, mama started feeling nauseous and weak again.
In the middle of the pandemic, Mama went through routine tests, and we were in disbelief with the results. The mass in her lung increased substantially to 7.2 x 3.8 x 5.1 cm. Her MRI also showed slightly big nodules in her brain. The Oncologist gave us two options: To change her oral chemo medicine to Tagrisso (80mg) or to have sessions of Radiation. He did not force us, but he strongly advised the medicine as it specifically targets cancer cells unlike the radiation which attacks both the good and bad cells. The new medicine now costs Php 3,310.00 per tablet every day, which Mama needs to take for at least three months. The routine tests and check-ups will come after for re-evaluation. On top of her oral chemo, Mama also takes supplements to strengthen her immune system.
As a family, we made a choice to go for the new oral chemo medicine to give my mother a fighting chance. Her grace, resilience, and will to endure her illness and the treatment needed make us hopeful and faithful that one day, Mama will be healed.
The continuation of her medication in the next few months is critical for her to regain the upper hand against the cancer’s spread. But as the weeks go by, our resources continue to get depleted which may eventually constrain us from continuing the life-saving regimen Mama needs. We’ve received help from family and friends and couldn’t thank them enough, but we are humbly appealing to your generous hearts now as we prepare for this most important stage in my mother’s fight against cancer.
Before this narrative comes to a clos, I would just like to specifically mention my best friends, Ross, Roxanne, Meghan, Kim, and Margie for being my constant support system and for always standing by me throughout all these years. I love you, ladies!
