1,000 Trees for Sheryl

Sheryl is a very good friend, kababata,and we shared memorable days together as members and key players of Fire Exit Club, a youth organization of mostly teenage volunteers in Brgy Bata, Bacolod City back in 1995.

She just recently lost her husband due cardiac arrest. A single mother now to Sofia, age 8, she strived to provide the best life possible for her, working as a call center agent in Bacolod City.Life as a young widow was made bearable and full of hope. She had everything figured out.

Until a very serious illness changed the course of her journey. She was stricken with stage 3 breast cancer. For almost a year Sheryl fought bravely, never wanting to be a burden to anyone. She tried every means possible for her to complete her chemotherapy and radiation treatments, while at the same time working and taking care of her daughter. Came September, 2020, Sheryl was required to have both her breasts removed and this was when she felt the burden taking its toll on her and her determined, unfazed, strong will. After her surgery, further tests showed cancer moving along aggressively. She now needs to deal with it head on, with more advanced and efficient treatments...If only she can have more years with her daughter Sofia, if only she can still watch her grow and live her dreams, if only she can have more of that fleeting, ephemeral joy of being her mother.

I have tears in my eyes writing this now. If only I can do more for her.If only I can help her bear this burden at least financially.As a friend it's not easy to simply watch her and not being able to do anything more. And I refuse that. I can still do something, so much more for her. I guess with your help.

If we can gather 1,000 friends to share Php 1,000.00 for her, we will be able to come up with Php 1,000,000.00 and this is a great chance for her to get the treatments she direly needs. We know that with the present pandemic, all of us have our own families to take care of. So we are not asking this for free. For each of you who will be sharing 1,000.00, or any amount for that matter, we will exchange it with one seedling of a watershed tree and we will be planting all 1,000 trees here in the barren mountains of Hinobaan. A great remembrance of bayanihan endeavor for a dear, dear friend. It will be forever remembered and treasured. And Sofia, her daughter, can someday testify how these 1,000 trees have once offered hope for her mother, and her.
