Campaign Story
This is a story of an 85yr old grandfather named Manong Chito. He is a vigorous, feisty and hardworking lolo. He owns a small sari sari store and he loves managing it. He even wakes up bright and early to open up his store and he spends his day selling to all his neighbourhood "suki". This is his routine everyday and we know that he enjoys it until one fateful day, May 18 2020, we rushed him to the hospital. He was weak, pale, and drowsy.
He came into the emergency room, they started rushing in to attend to him, it was daunting and alarming to see him in such a state. His hemoglobin is dropping and they immediately transfuse blood. Prior to his confinement, tatay became weak, he wasn't eating well because he felt his stomach was always full. He frequently passes loose watery stool and sometimes he is constipated for days. We tried to manage it at home because of the quarantine.
However it was getting worse. His abdomen started to increase in size day by day. We knew something was wrong.
His doctor, Doc Pio, informed us that tatay had an abdominal aortic aneurysm. It is a life threatening internal bleeding. They needed to do blood transfusion for him. The treatment, medications and management worked, but countless laboratory tests and numerous xray found something more terrifying. Abdominal ct scan showed us a large mass on his large intestine. We knew there is a mass because every time we touch tatay's abdomen we felt it and ct scan confirmed it.
Tatay had to go through all the poking of needles and taking in stronger medications. Doctors needed to put a tube into his nose going through his stomach (Nasogastric tube), trying to decompress it. Tatay wasn't allowed to take in anything orally so he was on TPN (total parenteral nutrition). That was the management for weeks, it worked but whenever they try to feed him with water, his abdomen will increase in size again. It was disheartening to see him wanting to eat, wanting to drink but he's body most especially his abdomen isn't allowing it.
Doctor tried to decompress his stomach again every time it's growing, they even tried draining fluids or gastric contents to help with the decompression but it's futile. Doctors told us that the mass might be the one causing it. His doctors found a partial obstruction on certain parts of the large intestine. Doctors are trying their best to manage the obstruction and stopping it from leading into complete obstruction.
Doctors advise us he might need surgery to address his stomach issue, but we are adamant because of his age, his current state of being weak, losing weight and his other co morbidities like his chronic kidney disease. We are still hoping that conservative management will work but came June 17 2020, it was 9pm when he started passing blood rectally, and he was in pain and his NGT is continuously draining liters of fecal materials, an indication that the partial obstruction became a total complete obstruction
June 18 2020 he needs to undergo an emergency surgery. (transverse colostomy, jejunostomy and mass resection on his large intestine). We needed to explain everything to tatay and he said to us do it if you think it's right. We left with no choice but to give our consent, and tatay's consent.
On the day of the surgery we tried to compose ourselves, we prayed for him and the medical team and tatay said to us "kakayanin to" and tears were flowing like hell.
It was the longest and most dreadful 5 hours of our life. It was scary knowing that our tatay, an 85 yr old grandfather is lying at the operating table, his surgeon getting ready to make his incision and then opening him up.
5 hours later, we were in such great relief when his surgeon Dr. Guinto informed us that the surgery was a success. Totoo nga na kakayanin nya kasi kinaya nya. Tatay is still in the coronary care unit for close observation.
Tatay is in the hospital for over a month now and with all the family's savings and efforts it is still not enough. His current running bill is 1,149,300 excluding all the doctors fee. We decided to crowdfunding to help with his hospital and medical expenses.
We, his family, are knocking at your kind hearts to help us in kind. Any amount, big or small will definitely help us. We are not giving up this fight because tatay is not giving up either . He's been fighting since Day 1 and he is still fighting and not giving up.
Thank you for your help and may the Lord bless you. Maraming salamat po!
