Food and medicine to save Amazon communities hiding from Covid-19

Indigenous communities in the Amazon have been devastated by the pandemic. In Ecuador, 280 families, including senior citizens and children are secluded in the jungle trying to protect themselves from the virus. A thousand people are fighting for survival.

They have no access to food and water since their rivers have been polluted by oil spills. They do not have any financial support from the government. Their options are limited, and supplies have nearly run out.

When the COVID crisis first began, the foundation SELVA VIDA SIN FRONTERAS directly supported the extended families of six Amazonian communities: the Kofanes from Ukavaki, Pisuri, Upirito and Aguas Blancas, the Sionas from San Victoriano and the Secoyas from Ñéñena.

The foundation donated food and medicine to shamans and community leaders with the support from the army in Lago Agrio. The first batch of donations fed and helped these communities and prevented them contracting COVID-19, a second batch was recently sent on June 18th with more than 1.600 food servings.

However, there are no funds left to support these communities now. If we do not act together to help these endangered and unique people, many of them will perish. In these hard times, we urge people to provide what they can. It is up to us to ensure these communities, who are already marginalized, have a chance at survival.

Help communities who at this very moment are hiding in a jungle from an enemy they cannot see. It is up to us to prevent 1000 people from suffering and putting themselves at risk because they need food.
