Help Ege to Afford a Double Degree Master’s Programme

Hello everybody,

My name is Ege and I'm a senior Molecular Biology and Genetics student at Istanbul Technical University. I'm a dedicated young scientist who would like to become an evolutionary biologist. My specific interest relies on genome evolution. Why genes and genome? Because there are lots of unknowns in these topics and I would love to become one of the people who will enlighten those. So? So, I can do the best contribution to the world! A contribution to science! A contribution to solving a couple of mysteries... I would like to become a professor in this field. So I can teach to dedicated students who have similar aims and maybe even inspire them!

As the second step of my science career, I've received an offer for a great programme. It is a double degree Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology. It is a joint project between four European universities (University of Groningen, Netherlands; Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, Germany; Uppsala University, Sweden; University of Montpellier, France) as partners and Harvard University (USA) and University of Lausanne (Switzerland) as associated partners. I will start my studies in Uppsala and then move to either Montpellier or Munich for the second semester. In the third and fourth semesters, I'll choose one of the partner universities to carry out my individual research projects.

As a senior student, I've been applied to many different universities. I have already offered a placement for Lund University Biology MSc degree and National University of Ireland-Galway Biomedical Genomics MSc degree. But I had to reject them because of the tuition fees. Now, this programme is much more affordable but I still need your help.

This two years programme costs 4500€ per year. Since, I am eligible for a partial tuition fee waiver -because I do not have funds that exceed 9000€- I have to pay 6000€ in total. For now, neither me nor my family can't afford that without your help (My only financial supporter is my mother who has a very low income as a retirement salary). To cover my living expenses during my studies I will get a student loan and work part-time. However, the maximum amount of the loan isn't enough to cover the tuition and the living expenses both.

Why I want this programme so much? Because it's the program where I can work with world-leading scientists. It's the programme that could open many doors to me for my career.

What if I can't reach the amount?

If I can't, I will apply for an MSc degree in Turkey and if I got accepted with a scholarship I'll donate the money for other educational campaigns. So money will go to support education in any way! And, I will share it with you!

Also, I know that we have great academicians in Turkey, but I believe that studying in different and high ranking universities will help me to improve myself a lot. Also, in Turkey, there are only a few groups working on 'evolutionary genetics'. Please check the image that shows the ranking of the universities in the programme. They all are the best ones! Let's spice things up! I've decided to have some rewards for my supporters:

I will give an online presentation to my supporters who donated 20$ or more. It'll be about evolution, genes, and my projects during my Master's degree. So, more people will know the definition and the objectives of the evolution. The language will be very basic and everyone can understand it. So if you don't have a biology background, no worries! Because evolution is as simple as everyone can understand. (The presentations will be in English and Turkish!)

Adım Ege. İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi'nde Moleküler Biyoloji ve Genetik Bölümü son sınıf öğrencisiyim. Aynı zamanda kendini bilime adamış evrimsel biyolog olmak isteyen genç bir bilim insanıyım. Asıl ilgi alanım evrimsel genomik. Neden genler ve genomlar mı? Çünkü her birimizin yapı taşını oluşturan bu alanda hala bir sürü bilinmeyen var. Ben de bu bilinmeyenlerdeki gizemi çözecek bilim insanlarından biri olmak istiyorum. Bu sayede de insanlığa elimden gelebilecek en iyi katkıyı yapabileceğimi umuyorum. Çünkü asıl katkıyı bilime yapmış olacağım. Bu katkıyla bazı gizemlerin çözülmesini bu sayede bilimin ilerleyebileceğini umuyorum. Bu alanda çalışmalarına devam eden bir akademisyen olup benimle benzer hedefleri olan öğrencilere yol göstermek, onlara öğretmek ve belki de onlara ilham kaynağı olmak istiyorum.

Kariyerimin ikinci adımında yüksek lisans yapmayı hedefliyorum. Harika bir programdan kabul aldım. Erasmus Mundus Evrimsel Biyoloji Master Programı her dönem farklı bir üniversitede eğitim almanı, sonrasında da mezun olduğunda çift diplomaya hak kazanmanı sağlıyor. Bu üniversiteler Hollandadaki Gröningen Üniversitesi, Almanyadaki Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, İsveçteki Uppsala Üniversitesi ve Fransadaki Montpellier Üniversitesi. Ayrıca, Harvard (Amerika) ve Lausanne (İsviçre) üniversiteleri programdaki partner üniversiteler. Ben ilk dönemime Uppsala Üniversitesinde başlayacağım ve ikinci dönem Montpellier ya da Munichte devam edeceğim. Üçüncü ve dördüncü sömestrde partner üniversiteler de dahil olmak üzere seçeceğim üniversitelerde akademik araştırma yürüteceğim.

İki yıllık bu program yıllık 4500 €. Herhangi bir burs bulamadığım için program bu ücretin bir kısmından (%33) muaf olabileceğimi söyledi. Dolayısıyla bu eğitimi alabilmem için toplamda 6000 € ödemem gerekiyor. Şu an için ben ve ailem bu ücreti karşılayamıyoruz. Eğitimim boyunca yaşam masraflarımı karşılayabilmek için öğrenci kredisi çekeceğim ve yaşadığım yerlerde eğitim alırken yarı zamanlı çalışacağım. Maalesef kredinin çekebileceğim en yüksek limiti program ücretini ve yaşam masraflarımı birlikte karşılamaya yetmiyor. Bu nedenle yardımınıza ihtiyacım var!

Neden mi bu programı istiyorum? Çünkü, bu program bana dünya lideri bilim insanları ile çalışma fırsatı verirken aynı zamanda geleceğim için bana çokça kapı açıyor.

Peki ya istediğim hedefe ulaşamazsam? İşte o zaman Türkiye'de yüksek lisans yapacağım. Türkiye'de burslu bir yüksek lisans kabulü alırsam, bu parayı başka bir eğitim kampanyasına bağışlayacağım. Öyle ya da böyle bu para eğitime gidecek ve siz de nereye gittiğini bileceksiniz.

Ayrıca, Türkiye'de harika akademisyenler ve hocalarım olmasına rağmen, Dünyanın en iyi üniversitelerinde okumanın beni daha çok geliştireceğini düşünüyorum. Diğer yandan Türkiye'de benim ilgi alanımda 'evrimsel genetik' çalışan hoca sayısı çok az. Times Higher Education'ın websitesinden aldığım görüntüde, program üniversitelerinin Biyoloji eğitimi veren üniversiteler içindeki sıralamasını görüyorsunuz (Kaynak).
