Campaign Story
Hi everyone, my name is Xavion Matteo Liberato Villanueva, but you can call me Xavi for short. I was born last year on November 23rd, a most awaited and precious gift as my parents would often whisper to my ear. I can’t wait to grow up and go to school and find out what those words mean but it sounds good hearing it from them. I have been good and kicking all those developmental milestones but around 2 weeks ago I suddenly fell ill.
My mom and dad took me to my pediatrician but I still was not feeling well, eventually I needed to be admitted in a hospital because my breathing was so fast. I don’t know about you guys, but I do not like going to hospitals because of all the poking and prodding. I know the doctors and nurses mean well and I take comfort in the fact that my parents are always there to soothe me, pray for me and love me.
After the initial work-up and tests, they found out that I have bronchopneumonia. Yikes! Another long word that I couldn’t understand yet, but it doesn’t sound good. I was placed on multiple intravenous antibiotics and have done multiple chest x-rays but there was no improvement. My oxygen saturations in the arterial blood gases that they did remained low, I was not thriving at all. I then heard my healthcare team saying that I needed to be transferred in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). I heard my parents pray that I hope I would get better soon; I wish for that too.
Once in the PICU, we soldiered on with multiple diagnostic tests and found that I have a bug in my gut, a small hole in my heart, and that my lung function tests are not improving. My parents and healthcare team were slightly perplexed as nothing was improving despite being on stronger intravenous antibiotics. A few days ago, I was not really looking well and feeling well; my healthcare team sat down with my parents and said that I had developed Congestive Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension. Again, another set of long words that I do not understand yet but does not sound good at all.
My healthcare team did more diagnostic tests, and now they think I might have Primary Immunodeficiency, we are still waiting for the results to come through. From what I understood, my body’s immune system is not functioning as it is meant to. I had to be given Intravenous Immunoglobulin to help boost up my immune system. As we wait for the results, my lung function tests kept on getting worse requiring me to get intubated and hooked to a ventilator to help me with my breathing and to ensure my organs get proper oxygenation. I needed a central line inserted to help support my cardiovascular system.
As I am fighting for my life, my parents continue to cover me with their prayers, say that they love me and wish that I will get better soon; I wish the same too. I pray that you could extend your love, prayers and support to me, my loving parents and the rest of our supportive families during this time. With your help, I could go to school someday and learn those long words I heard earlier.
In behalf of Xavi’s parents, Elo Liberato and Mac Villanueva, I humbly knock into your generous hearts to extend financial support to Help Save Xavi.
