Apollo’s new start UPDATE 6/26/20

The week we adopted him (at only 12 weeks old) Apollo was rushed to the emergency vet two days before Christmas. After extensive testing it was discovered that Apollo had been born with a portosystemic shunt. Basically, his blood does not get filtered through his liver properly, toxins build up in his blood stream which cause brain damage and death within 24 hours. His condition has been temporarily stabilized with medication and a strict prescription diet, while we searched for an experienced small animal soft tissue surgeon to attempt the procedure necessary to correct Apollo's condition permanently. Many surgeons we explored quoted $5000-$7000 for the procedure, but Dr. Covey at OVRS can do it with a 90% chance of survival for $2700-$3100 (price breakdown included in pictures) Anything raised over and above the amount needed for Apollo's surgery will be donated to the Ferndale Cat Shelter. Ferndale Cat Shelter has been very supportive on Apollo's journey to wellness. Apollo is a treasured part of our family, and has become best friends with our son Lincoln. We want them to have every chance for their friendship to grow.

UPDATE: 6/26/20

Apollo went in to OVRS this morning and will be going in to surgery this afternoon. The updated estimate for his surgery is $2800-$3400. This includes after care onsite observation and post op medications. We will get a call from the doctor this evening letting us know how Apollo is doing. If all goes according to plan he should be able to come home in two or three days. The biggest risks to Apollo are seizures or internal bleeding caused by the shunt being closed and the new infusion of blood to his liver being more than it can handle.
