Campaign Story
My sister will be 33 on January 31st. She is the best pre-k assistant there is. She is kind. She is fun. She absolutely loves to dance. She cares for people and she loves children.
Jessica has been coughing for the last 6 months. When the coughing had just started she saw a doctor who said there was nothing wrong. Now after a couple of X-rays and CT scans she was diagnosed pneumonia and lymphoma.
"Lymphoma is cancer that begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes. These cells are in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body. When you have lymphoma, lymphocytes change and grow out of control."
Jessica is in Venezuela temporarily waiting for her teaching papers to be stamped by the government so she can go on to a teaching offer in Mexico. Unfortunately Jessica is uninsured. Her siblings and mom live abroad. We have been putting money towards her doctors appointments and exams, but we need help.
Public healthcare in Venezuela is in a very bad shape. Even private hospitals struggle to get resources and medications.
Jessica saw two pneumologists, a thoracic surgeon and a lymphoma specialist last week, next step is getting a biopsy, which so far will cost between $5.000 and $7.500. The tumor is placed in her chest, too large and too risky to be operated. Doctors are figuring out the best way to pick the sample for the biopsy, we should know by Monday.
Its urgent to get the biopsy done for treatment to start. Treatment is likely to be chemo and radiation.
We need all the help we can get.
Thank you
