On Friday the 29th of November 2019 at around 21:00, our workshop broke out in flames because one of our petrol generators caught alight when we tried to start it during a power cut.

Building started at Triton Dive Lodge in December 1996 and the workshop was the first brick building that was built by one of our founding partners, the late Peter Timm.

Our beautiful lodge was built by one of the pioneers of technical diving, a real diving legend Peter Timm. Peter discovered the Sodwana Bay coelacanth population on a training dive with 2 students to 110m in the year 2000. Since then we have been holding expeditions and are the only dive lodge in the world that can take someone to physically see this fish in its natural habitat. We have worked with various film crews over the years and filled many cylinders from the compressor room at our lodge. Peter sadly died in a technical diving accident in 2014 which sent shock waves worldwide. His fiancé Eve continues to run the lodge and maintain his legacy with the help of Rolleen, the other founding partner. This has been extremely difficult for women in a man's world, in a rural area of South Africa, but Eve's love of the lodge and memories of Peter help her to keep trying.

During the fire, we lost our massive Reavell compressor, air banks, around 60 cylinders, all of our technical diving stage cylinders plus recreational diving cylinders, our helium analizer, nitrox analizer, as well as all the gauges and valves necessary for a big air filling station, all the tools we owned, all of our fuel spugs, 3 generators, all our spare tyres, window frames, doors for building new houses and sadly all the wood we were storing for our pool deck to be replaced. The cost of new star delta panels and a soft start for a new compressor is massive. We did not have insurance because our lodge is all thatched and we have many trees, no insurer will cover us for fire.

We are fast approaching our busy season and are blessed that we have been lent diving cylinders to service our clients but we will need to replace our own, and try and finance everything else that we lost in the New Year. We are struggling to get back on our feet. Any donations will help us rebuild our workshop area and replace our compressor and cylinders, banks and filling room which is the heart of a busy diving lodge.

Please if anyone can make a donation no matter how small it will help Triton Dive Lodge to continue.

  • We dived with Triton in 2013, and hearing about Peter who we just got to know was really a shock to us. You guys go above and beyond and we just love the comradely that you have between employees and of course customers. So sad to hear about the fire , hopefully our donation goes a little way to helping. God bless

Update posted by Eve Marshall at 03:00 pm

Yes, the fire burnt cables and our main DB box was fitted against the workshop wall which fell over. Oom Hannes (electrician) and his son-in-law Erich came to our rescue after the fire to make sure our cables etc. were safe and no-one could get hurt, they did this at. . . . .

  • Dear Eve and the rest of the Sodwana team. We spent a few unforgettable days at your lodge in December 2011 on our honeymoon to South Africa and Mozambique. Among other things we saw our very first whale shark after 20 years of diving all around the world - it was amazing!! We are very sorry to hear about the fire and hope that this token gift will help towards rebuilding what has been lost. Hopefully there will be many more to come!!! All the best, Lena and Marcel from Switzerland
