Sadly we got word yesterday that the Snowboard Junior World Championships (JWC) to be held in France 3/23-25/2020 has been officially cancelled due to the rapidly spreading corona virus. I was counting on that event to up my World Cup standings as I was the 3rd highest World Cup competitor to attend the event. Sadly this is my last year to compete in the SBX Junior Worlds since I will be 21 next year. (and I was unable to compete in the 2020 Junior Olympics because I was too old.)
Last year I missed the 2019 JWC due to my untimely shattered wrist at the SBX World Cup in early March, and the 2018 Junior Worlds in New Zealand due to competing at the U20 Ultimate Frisbee Junior World Championships which were being held at the same time in Canada. (It was a tough decision, but I would age out of the U20 Ultimate after that year, and I thought I had 2 more years of SBX Junior Worlds.) Sadly things don't always work out due to events beyond your control. I guess that's a lesson on Life...
Lots has been happening since Ski Cooper NorAms, so please forgive late updates. The Ski Cooper NorAms was a lot of fun with the Australian and Canadian World Cup Teams competing! The 1st competition I had the fasted Qualifier Time beating Belle Brockhoff, #2 overall on the World Cup! Unfortunately I got a bad pull out of the start and couldn't make up the lost time and finished 4th. The 2nd event I finished 4th again. Not where I wanted to finish, but it was fun competition.
Due to those results, I decided to skip the World Cup in Spain 3/5-7 and focus on improving my North American Cup standings where I'm presently 3rd overall. So I'm competing in the NorAms at Beaver Valley Canada 3/5-6 and Mont Orignal, Canada 3/11-13.
Flew back from San Diego Prez Day Collegiate Ultimate Tournament late Monday night, and now I'm up at Ski Cooper training for the Boardercross NorAms. Had a fun day training on the course. We'll be training again Friday 10:30am-12:30pm. ISTC (International Snowboard Training Center) run by dedicated Ross Hindman, should have a good showing with 11 of us competing! The 2 separate SBX Competitions will be held Saturday Feb 22 and Sunday Feb 23 at Ski Cooper. Both days will have the same schedule with Training Runs from 9-9:50am, Qualifiers 10:15am-12:30pm, and Finals 1:30-4:30pm. Come on out and cheer us on! Go ISTC!
It was so great to be playing again with the CU Quandary Ultimate Frisbee Team! We have an amazing team that really gels. Unfortunately due to the CU Indoor Bubble Playing Fields being damaged by all the snow Boulder has received this winter, women's and men's teams in ALL Club sports are scrambling to find venues to train in. So we were a bit off on timing in plays, but no worries...we'll be ready for the Northwest Challenege in March! Sko Buffs!
Quandary are embracing their youth movement, with arguably the best rookie class of the entire college division. Stacy Gaskill and Skye Fernandez are as close as it comes to five-star recruits, and they have their U20 teammate Bailey Shigley with them for good measure. Colorado doesn’t have to wait for these rookies to get up to speed, they’re going to be the ones setting the speed in any game they play.
Adding Stacy Gaskill and Skye Fernandez to a team with Bailey Shigley and Saioa Lostra seems a little unfair. Even ignoring the fact that Shigley, Fernandez, and Gaskill have played together on the 2018 U20 national team, they’re all individual talents that are truly two-way players.
The game against UCSD looms large, but apart from that, Colorado should have pretty smooth sailing as they start their season in San Diego. Their ceiling is nothing short of the tournament title, and their floor is likely still making the bracket.
After placing 4th at the Gore Mountain SBX NorAms, I returned to Colorado. Had a crazy week of training SBX at Ski Cooper during the day, and then several nights practicing In Boulder with CU Quandary in Ultimate. Today we flew to San Diego, CA for the Collegiate President’s Day Tournament. Very excited to be back with the CU Women’s Team. Should be a fun weekend!
Finally cleared from my concussion to race the 2 NorAms at Big White. The US & Canadian World Cup women attended both which made it great competition. I finished 8th on 1/30 and 6th 1/31. Not bad for not being able to train or race on the course earlier! I’m now training at Gore Mountain in NY for the next set of NorAms 2/4-5. Stay tuned...
PS Thank You to everyone who believes in me and has contributed to my Training Fund. I really appreciate it! Every bit helps!
After sitting out the 2 World Cups at Big White due to my concussion training 11 days ago, I’ve been cleared by the US Team Neuro MD & PT, and through continual monitoring and SCAT & IMPACT testing, to compete in the Big White NorAm tomorrow. So excited to get back on the course & compete! Yay!
Had a great US SBX Team Camp at the Sunshine Resort in Alberta, Canada January 12-19. The SBX course was rad and a lot of fun! It was awesome training with Faye, Rosi, Lindsey and Livia. Learned a lot training with these amazing US SBX women! Unfortunately on Saturday when we were training with the Canadian World Cup Team one of the Canadians tried to pass me on the course, clipped my board, I caught a heel edge, clocked my noggin and ended up with a concussion.
I was hoping to be cleared for the World Cup Qualifiers today at Big White, but the US Team doctors want me to rest my brain a bit longer. So I'm sitting this one out. Unfortunately the Feldberg Germany World Cup next week has been cancelled due to lack of snow. As a result they are cancelling the mixed team event here on Sunday and running another World Cup competition. I most likely will not be cleared to compete in that either. Very frustrating and disappointing! But got to let the noggin heal!
On the bright side, there is a North American SBX Cup (next competition level down) being held here at Big White January 29-31, so the Canadian & US World Cup Teams are staying and competing in those. Hopefully I'll be good to go by then. Stay tuned...
Had a fun time representing Ultimate Frisbee and the Spirit of the Game at the Beach of Dreams Ultimate Tournament in Santa Monica, CA. 1/2-5/2020. I was honored to be 1 of 28 top male & female ultimate athletes selected by USA Ultimate to showcase Beach Ultimate and work with the attending Middle and High School kids. Beach Ultimate is Rad and quite a workout running in the sand with only 4 players ! On the other hand, layouts are less painful!
