Early one Sunday morning in August I found three tiny black kittens, about six weeks old, crying and running around in terror outside my apartment In Mijas-Costa, Malaga, Spain. They had obviously been deliberately abandoned there as they had certainly not been there a few minutes earlier. I managed to put them in a carrier and left them in my bathroom with food and water, which they eventually plucked up courage to eat and drink. They went to the vet for a check over and flea treatment a couple of days later, and then back to the bathroom until they were old enough and strong enough to be homed.

We decided that a Facebook post looking for loving homes, and shared to the many rescue pages here in southern Spain, was the best way to go, along with asking local rescue groups and vets to keep them in mind, and to promote them along with their own animals. I decided to give them names, Bonnie, Olive and Merlin, and I posted lovely cute photos and videos which were regularly updated, and although they received lots of likes and shares, not one genuine offer of a forever home was received. Why, I honestly have no idea, apart from the sheer number of cats and kittens looking for homes here, and that black cats are considered bad luck in Spain. All this time they were living in my bathroom, and getting the run of the apartment when my own two cats were out on the terrace. It was far from ideal, and my cats were becoming more fed-up and stressed with the situation, one actually making herself ill because of it. It was then that a friend of Hazel, one of our feral cat feeding group, suggested contacting Woodside Animal Sanctuary in Plymouth, who sometimes take animals from Portugal for homing. They said that they would take them, but I would need to get them there!

To keep the cost down, and because they're all so adorable, I'm keeping Merlin. I think my two older females will accept him more easily than one of the girls. Bonnie and Olive went to the vet for their microchipping, rabies injections and passports on 18/9, and I started the search for transport that could get them to Devon before Brexit! Many companies don't cover that area of the UK, but eventually I found someone who took animals to the sanctuary fairly regularly, and were very happy to help rescue kittens, as they have their own rescue in Portugal. They were also very reasonably priced, which certainly helps!

The transport is now booked, the deposit paid, and Bonnie and Olive will leave Spain on October 24th, and arrive in the UK on the 27th. The vet treatment, paperwork and transport will be over £700 in total. I am paying this, but it's a lot of money, and this is where I'm really going to need help! I'm hoping that through this fundraiser I can get the total amount needed to get them on their way. Any amount will be very gratefully received, and If by any chance it manages to raise more, any extra will be put towards any future vet bills for our feral colonies, which we have always paid out of our own pockets.

Thank you to anyone who bothers to read this, and many, many thanks to anyone who feels that it is worth donating to! x

They have been at the sanctuary for just over two weeks, and for the last few days their profile has said 'reserved'! Fingers crossed that this leads to a fantastic new home for them, and hopefully it is together.

Kitten dramas!

Update posted by Bev Hindle at 02:58 pm

The kittens have been to the vet a few times this week and had a couple of overnight stays as they stopped eating! After lots of investigations, as they showed no other signs of illness, the vet had decided that their adult teeth are pushing through, and that, combined with. . . . .
