Burundi has jailed its Congolese students.

News reports show that the government of Burundi has suddenly decided that students studying in its country must have a Congolese passport. Until yesterday it was sufficient for them to have a CEPGL which is valid for travel between Congo, Burundi and Rwanda.

Students, including my friend Socrate (sitting in the centre), have been rounded up and taken on trucks to jail. Their valid identity cards and CEPGL papers have been taken from them.

They are kept in a cell with murderers, rapists and other violent criminals. These criminals accost them at night for money or sex. There is one toilet between 40 people.

Some students have been deported back to the Congo. Students went on strike for a day in protest and their leader - who has a valid passport - has also disappeared. At least one student has been found dead.

The Burundi authorities are insisting that Congolese students must buy a Congo passport and visa and also pay judicial costs to Burundi.

Socrate must pay $400 in order to be freed from jail and continue his studies.

If you are able, please help rescue Socrate from a dangerous situation.

Out of prison for the moment...

Update posted by Nick Tischler at 04:35 pm

Good news! We collected enough money to pay the police $50 "fine" and Socrate has been released from prison. He got out this morning and went straight back to studying in university. However, he is still obliged to pay for a Congolese passport and an annual student visa within the. . . . .

  • I beg of you to help our Friend. There is a small group of Quakers in both the USA and England who are paying this young man's college tuition. We are invested in his future. Won't you?
