About the Campaign Owner:

Hello, My name is stella Akiteng, (M/s) ; also Founder and Programme Director for Intercultural Development Agency (IDA). I think like there were no box. With observation, I pay attention to detail. I have over 10 years experience managing different projects to include Livelihoods, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Peace and Conflict, HIV/AIDs and Forum Theatre, Child Protection, Women Natural Resource Governance. Some of the skills I possess include Networking, critical analytical skills, communication skills, management and leadership skills.

At least 80% of my career has been rooted in Acoli sub region of northern Uganda-post conflict and conflict affected regions including south sudan. In my early career days, I served in peri-urban and urban settings of Uganda and south sudan through volunteer work (2001-2008). I have also done some work in Zambia and Belgium as a trainer.

As a citizen of Uganda (by descent from Ngora District in Eastern Uganda Cattle Corridor), I have on an on-going basis been resident in the home region from birth.

I have since March 2015 embarked on community service through IDA on a full-time basis. We need to start early and change the way children, young people think because there is a war that needs to be won; and women need to also take lead and be part of this process of positively changing the mindset.

Why the money is being raised?

Right now, more than 1 billion people suffer from hunger meaning that 1 in every 6 people on earth don’t get enough food to live a healthy life. This year 36 million of these people will die of hunger http://www.theworldcounts.com/counters/global_hunger_statistics/how_many_people_die_from_hunger_each_year . Millions in East Africa, with no exception of Uganda are experiencing chronic hunger and the threat of famine; children are the worst affected, with their health and development drastically affected (World Vision, 2019); (Daniel McGahey, Jul 2015).

Uganda's economy widely depends on the agricultural sector. Increasing temperatures and less reliable rainfall put farming systems under pressure (Allison, E. H. 2009). We have also been experiencing longer droughts made worse by cutting down of trees. Farmers have already experienced an increased loss attributed to declining soil moisture not to mention the problem of hunger and Food insecurity in both households and schools.

Goal Amount and currency: $15,341

Ps. In the case that funds raised are more than the targeted Goal Amount, program scale-up shall be ensured. Individuals/parties are encouraged to contribute amounts they are able.

The Proposed Budget and Expected Results-How will the money be used?

  • ($1*2000 trees/seedlings = $2,000) - Support each school going child to plant 5 trees (including community awareness on importance of trees) to reduce and/or prevent climate change vulnerability. The target is 2000 trees planted in 12 months by 400 school going children through school clubs and women groups in Ngora and Nwoya districts of eastern and northern Uganda respectively. This programme Intervention also highly popularises Environmental Education (EE) in-class and extra-curricular programs that improve student learning by offering an enriching way for learners and teachers to connect their appreciation of the natural world to academics. (Archie, M. 2003), (Alexandria, VA 2002).
  • ($8000) - To grow, develop and establish a Reputable Climate Responsive Designed Demonstration Platform and Model Farm in Kapir sub county, Ngora District in Eastern Uganda in 12 months for transference of skills, knowledge, experience and development at local, national, regional and international level; and popularize organic farming (Agro-ecology) also through irrigation during drought. We shall also work towards creating an enabling and Protective environment for visitors and boost the demonstration platform through construction of: bio digesters for cooking and lighting coupled with some eco-stoves for cooking, constructing huts (Accommodation for volunteers/tourists) in Kapir sub county, Ngora District in Eastern Uganda; with at least 20 short-term, mid-term and long-term volunteers/personnel hosted annually under the Humanitarian Tourism Programme Component (Education; Research & Documentation for Development; and Livelihoods/Farming). Inaddition, consequently expected is at least 10 Local schools and households adapt and implement the sustainable kitchen gardens/gardens and clean/renewable energy concept among other climate responsive designs for sustainable rural development in Ngora and Amuru Districts of Eastern Uganda and Northern Uganda respectively every 12 months.
  • ($1,429) - Carry out Media events, communication, routine field monitoring and supervision in 12 months.
  • ($2500 ) - Conduct learning and knowledge exchange (agro-ecology/organic farming, clean/renewable energy etc) for community members of Eastern and Northern Uganda districts in 12 months.
  • ($857) - External Program Evaluation by Independent Consultant
  • ($555) - Annual Financial Audit by independent certified firm

Altogether, also in-line with SDG 1.5: by 2030 build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations, and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters; SDG 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all”;SDG 5 “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”; SDG 17: “strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development”)

When the money will be used? 1st January 2019 – 31st December 2019

Ps. However, the Environmental Education Hub shall be an on-going programme Intervention.
