Children first

This is a message to humanity in order to provide equal opportunities and access to education for all the children in Gongo village, a community of 2000 people in the north east side of Tanzania. By the end of April Anna and Smaragda are about to join the team of SANA (Saving Africa’s Nature) and start implementing the project of constructing a Nursery School.

Our Vision and Objectives

Born and raised in Greece, both sharing similar values and visions of life, both carrying this restlessness and romance, strongly connected to the need of accomplishing something significant that will have a positive impact on others. Anna’s recent experience of volunteering and collaborating with SANA was the sparkle needed for such a mission to be initiated. And what a mission this will be! Having a co traveler and partner this time, Smaragda, and moved by the work and commitment of people of SANA, they decided to leave their “normal”, comfortable lives behind and engage to this program in order to provide little children with the opportunity to attend school from early age and have a facility to host them during their first steps in life. It is beyond imagination, especially for people that grew up in Western world to conceive the everyday struggle given for equal access to school and by extension to education. The existing situation in school of Gongo is already hard enough with staff and teaching material shortages. Could you conceptualize two teachers having to work with and for a school filled with 450 children in only two classrooms and at the same time children under the age of six having no access at all? Well, hard as it sounds, that is the absolute reality for them. This is where SANA and we step up.

• What is SANA?

Saving Africa’s Nature (SANA) is a non-profit making company registered in Tanzania to consolidate efforts for those who share similar values of love and respect for Nature. Since its inception in 2008, SANA programs have transform the lives of the Saadani community. Founded by Mr. Constantine Coucoulis (Philanthropist), SANA’s projects and activities revolve around three key factors: EMPOWERMENT, CONSERVATION, and EDUCATION. Concerning the latter, for over 10 years now, its main activity aimed to provide the youngests with greater possibilities and maybe career options, and with the knowledge or expertise to make a sustainable income and at the same time prevent the ecological destruction taking place in the area. From vision to action

Around 2 months ago Anna flew to Tanzania with 25 other amazing people, a group of volunteers called 'Wheeling2help', in order to visit a village called Gongo in the middle of nowhere and provide help in a project for approximately 10 days. Coming back home, she found herself going through moments of reflection, as her worldview was changing. That was when she decided she had to go back there and carry on contributing anyhow to the ongoing acts taken by the people of SANA.

While struggling to figure out how to proceed with the above, she expressed these thoughts to a friend, Smaragda, who embraced her concerns and decided to join her and support her on this decision. The latter was followed by consecutive online meetings with the people of SANA in order to come up with a project that would alleviate the struggles of the schooling community in Gongo village. The need of extending the primary school was already a top priority, hence the assignment was given.

The project in detail

Having presented in short our credentials along with the scope of the mission, we would like to elaborate more on the project per se.

More specifically,

• The nursery will be an extra classroom built at Gongo Primary School.
• The children between 5 to 7 years old will be hosted in this pre-school.
• It will accommodate between 30 to 45 students.
• Some of the things needed for the nursery school include toys, desks story books etc

In the meantime, assistance and expertise will be offered, either with regard to facilitate teachers’ work by providing parallel support during lessons, or by observing what each child’s struggles with.

Donate and Support

We are getting used to overpassing inequality as if it does not exist. But it does, and since we are given the chance, it makes the most of sense to us and motivates us strongly to step in and support the admirable efforts of the local teachers, volunteers, SANA’s work to promote education.

However, as you might understand, even the greatest of intentions could not perform miracles; for this project to continue and be completed your help is required. All of you, family and friends, anyone around the globe who shares the same concerns with us, step up! Fundraising and volunteering is the only way to keep on realizing important initiatives like this and upgrade the lives of children in the area of Gongo.

Who is Anna

Anna is a 27-year old girl raised between Greece and Italy, who considers herself citizen of the world, traveler, fashion lover, hard worker, dreamer and optimist. She speaks 4 and a half languages and she is addicted to music and cinema. She studied International and European studies (specialized in Political Diplomacy, with a thesis about the Rights of the Children in Africa) at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki and then, attended an online course in Maritime Business Administration of the Kapodistrian University of Athens. Moved to Mykonos island in order to work for two long summer seasons in a clothing boutique and then to Naples in south Italy, as she wanted to complete and formalize her knowledge on the Italian language in the Neapolitan University “L’Orientale”. Willing to get in a more professional working environment, she got hired by PVH Corp (global headquarters of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein) in Amsterdam where she stayed for almost 2 years. Last September, she decided to follow the sun and the sea, as she understood that these two together with her people, are the most important things for her happiness, so now she lives in south Italy with her family, planning her next step.

Who is Smaragda

Smaragda on the other hand, is in her early 30's, also coming from Greece though never felt like belonging to a place. Always intrigued by constantly transforming fields as such of political and social movements, she studied Political Science at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and later on she had her master’s in Balkan, Slavic and Oriental studies at University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki. She is also into languages (again, 4), although she is missing Anna’s half;). In between jobs that concerned mostly waitressing during her 20’s, she enjoys interacting with people and being introduced to different cultures, a habit she still seeks for as an Airbnb hostess. An avid reader herself, for the past few years she is occupied in the bookstore industry, and planning to continue studies in the fascinating “art” of translation.When not pinning places on google maps and dreaming of her future travels, she will probably be found in a dark cinema hall or skipping sleep holding her laptop in bed, as cinema, she thinks, is the perfect combination of reality check and escaping it at the same time. Humbleness and courage are the features she admires the most in people, and she considers that having her friends and family always by her side to support her, even if spoiling her a little, might be her most fulfilling accomplishment so far.

Prima i bambini

Questo è un messaggio per l'umanità al fine di fornire pari opportunità e l'accesso all'istruzione per tutti i bambini nel villaggio di Gongo, una comunità di 2000 persone nella parte nord-est della Tanzania. Fine Aprile Anna e Smaragda sono in procinto di unirsi col gruppo di SANA (Saving Africa’s Nature) e iniziare ad attuare il progetto di costruzione di una scuola materna.

Visione e obiettivi

Nate e cresciute in Grecia, entrambe condividendo valori e visioni di vita simili, entrambe portando questa inquietudine e questo romanticismo, fortemente legate alla necessità di compiere qualcosa di significativo che avrà un impatto positivo sulla vita degli altri. La recente esperienza di volontariato di Anna e la collaborazione con SANA sono state la scintilla necessaria per avviare una simile missione. E che missione sarà! Avendo un'altra viaggiatrice e “complice” questa volta, Smaragda, hanno deciso di lasciare la loro "normalità", una vita confortevole alle spalle e di impegnarsi a questo programma al fine di fornire ai bambini la possibilità di frequentare la scuola, fin dalla tenera età e avere una struttura per ospitarli durante i loro primi passi nella vita. E oltre ogni immaginazione, soprattutto per le persone che sono cresciute nel mondo occidentale di concepire la lotta di tutti i giorni data per la parità di accesso alla scuola. La situazione esistente nella scuola di Gongo è già abbastanza difficile, con il personale e la carenza di materiale didattico. Potete immaginare due insegnanti che lavorano per una scuola di 450 bambini in due sole aule e allo stesso tempo che i bambini sotto i 7 anni non hanno accesso a questa scuola? Beh, per quanto possa sembrare difficile, questa è la realtà assoluta per loro. Questo è dove SANA e noi interverremo.

Dalla visione all'azione

Circa 2 mesi fa Anna ha viaggiato in Tanzania con 25 persone straordinarie, un'iniziativa di un gruppo di volontari che si chiama “Wheeling2help”', per visitare un villaggio chiamato Gongo nel bel mezzo del nulla e fornire un aiuto in un progetto per circa 10 giorni. Tornando a casa, si ritrovò a passare dei momenti di riflessione e di pensieri: il modo in cui vedeva il mondo stava cambiando. Così si è resa conto che doveva tornare là e continuare a contribuire e offrire il suo aiuto, fare qualcosa, ma qualcosa di così grande che influenzerà in maniera positiva la vita delle persone per molti anni.

Mentre lotta per decidere come procedere con quanto sopra, ha espresso questi pensieri ad un amica, Smaragda, che ha abbracciato le sue preoccupazioni e ha deciso di unirsi a lei e a dare il suo sostegno a questa decisione. Quest'ultima è stata seguita da riunioni online consecutive con la gente di SANA, al fine di elaborare un progetto in grado di alleviare le lotte della comunità scolastica nel villaggio di Gongo. La necessità di estendere la scuola elementare era già una priorità assoluta.

Il progetto in dettaglio

Dopo aver presentato in breve le nostre credenziali insieme con la portata della missione, vorremmo elaborare più sul progetto in sé.

Più specificamente,

• L'asilo nido sarà un'aula extra costruita presso la scuola elementare di Gongo.
• I bambini tra i 5 e i 7 anni saranno ospitati in questa scuola materna.
• Ospiterà tra i 30 e i 45 studenti.
• Alcune scuole materne includono giocattoli, libri di storia di scrittori, ecc

Nel frattempo verranno offerti assistenza e competenze, sia per facilitare il lavoro degli insegnanti fornendo un sostegno parallelo durante le lezioni o osservando le lotte di ogni bambino.

Dona e Supporta

Ci stiamo abituando a superare le lotte della disuguaglianza come se non esistessero. Tuttavia, come potresti capire, anche le più grandi intenzioni non possono compiere miracoli; per continuare e completare questo progetto, è necessario il tuo aiuto. Tutti voi, familiari e amici, chiunque in tutto il mondo che condivide le stesse preoccupazioni con noi, potete intensificare. La raccolta di fondi e il volontariato sono l'unico modo per continuare a realizzare iniziative importanti come questa e migliorare la vita dei bambini nella zona di Gongo.

Ti promettiamo di aggiornarti passo dopo passo durante questo progetto dal primo minuto fino alla fine. Ogni contributo che fai non sarà semplicemente apprezzato in teoria ma farai un impatto reale sulla vita di altre persone e sarai in grado di testimoniare si svolge come succede con i social media. Chi è Anna

Anna è una ragazza di 27 anni cresciuta tra la Grecia e l'Italia, che si considera cittadina del mondo, viaggiatrice, amante della moda, gran lavoratrice, sognatrice ed ottimista. Parla 4 lingue e mezzo ed è dedita alla musica e al cinema. Avendo una laurea in Relazioni Internazionali (specializzata in Diplomazia Politica, con una tesi sui Diritti dei Bambini in Africa) presso l'Università di Macedonia a Salonicco e ha frequentato un corso online in Amministrazione delle Imprese Marittime dell'Università Kapodistriana di Atene. Trasferitosi sull'isola di Mykonos per lavorare per due lunghe stagioni estive in una boutique di abbigliamento e poi a Napoli, nel sud dell'Italia, in quanto voleva completare e formalizzare la sua conoscenza della lingua italiana nell'Università "L'Orientale" di Napoli. Pur volendo lavorare in un ambiente più professionale, è stata assunta da PVH Corp (sede mondiale di Tommy Hilfiger e Calvin Klein) ad Amsterdam, dove ha vissuto per quasi 2 anni. Lo scorso Settembre, ha deciso di seguire il sole e il mare, poiché ha capito che questi due insieme alla sue persone, sono le cose più importanti per la sua felicità. Ora vive nel sud Italia con la sua famiglia, pianificando il suo prossimo passo.

... e chi è Smaragda

Smaragda, d'altra parte, è una ragazza di 32 anni, quindi più saggia, proveniente anche dalla Grecia che, sebbene non sia mai vissuta all'estero, non ha mai portato questo senso di appartenenza a un luogo. Sempre affascinata dalla costante trasformazione dei settori in quanto tali dei movimenti politici e sociali, ha studiato Scienze Politiche presso l'Università Aristotele di Salonicco, e in seguito ha conseguito il master in Salonicco, Università di Macedonia, negli studi balcanici, slavi e orientali. È anche in lingue (4 pure lei), anche se manca la metà di Anna;) Tra i lavori che riguardavano principalmente la cameriera durante i suoi 20 anni, le piaceva sempre interagire con le persone, soprattutto gli stranieri, qualcosa che cerca ancora come hostess di AirBnB. Una appassionata lettrice, negli ultimi anni è stata impegnata nel settore della libreria e ha progettato di continuare gli studi nell'affascinante "arte" della traduzione. Quando non mette appuntamenti su google maps e sogna i suoi viaggi futuri, probabilmente sarà trovato in una sala buia del cinema o saltando addormentato tenendo il suo laptop a letto, come il cinema, lei pensa, è la perfetta combinazione di controllo della realtà e sfuggire allo stesso tempo. Umiltà e coraggio sono le caratteristiche che ammira di più nelle persone, e lei ritiene che avere i suoi amici e la sua famiglia sempre al suo fianco per sostenerla, potrebbe essere il suo risultato più soddisfacente finora.
