The project aims to develop an integrated water supply project to serve about 1500 women and children affected by an acute shortage of water and water related diseases in Nyakach village. The work will include development of a borehole, storage tank and water collection points. Women and children will be trained and supported in hygiene, safe water use and water conservation. Other social and economic activities will also be integrated including tree planting and vegetable production.

The sources of water for about 300 households in Nyakach village are a nearby seasonal river called Asao. These sources are not enclosed and get contaminated as they are shared with livestock and wild animals. This has made the community experience long spells of water shortage and high incidence of water borne diseases. Women have to carry water on their backs over long distances causing severe back problems. Learning in school is also affected.

The project proposes development of an integrated water supply project to serve about 300 households. The project will comprise of drilling a borehole, installation of water storage tanks, and development of community water collection points. The project will also provide training to women and young people in water project management and maintenance, health and sanitation, water conservation, tree planting and use of water for productive activities as well as educating school children in hygiene.

It is expected that this project will lead to improved health of 1500 women and children as a result of increased access to water, more time for women and children to engage in other livelihood activities as well as better practices in hygiene and environmental management.
