On December 20, 2018, a few days before Christmas, miracle twin babies Rocio and Rocia were born prematurely at only 29 weeks gestational age. They were born 8 weeks early, despite being given every possible medical solution to prevent them from coming out too soon.

My husband and I were overjoyed when we found out about my pregnancy in June, but given my small body frame and reproductive health issues, I already had doubts from the start whether I would be able to carry them to full-term. So the doctors and I did everything we can to make it a healthy pregnancy, from taking hormonal and prenatal supplements to reducing my workload while they continuously monitored me.

Going Into Pre-term Labor

Unfortunately, at 27 weeks, I started showing signs of preterm labor. The doctors were able to catch it early. I was given steroid shots to help develop the twins' lungs faster. They also put a pessary inside me to help take the pressure off my cervix. (Think of it as a plug that helps keeps the babies inside.) Then I was ordered to be on strict bed rest.

Baby in Distress and Emergency C-section

But after two weeks, I had what felt like a bad stomach bug that sent me rushing to the labor room. It turned out that I was already in labor and was 3 cms dilated. I was admitted to the maternal ICU and doctors were able to halt labor, but one of the babies showed signs of distress. They had to perform a c-section right away. Like any mother would, I feared for the lives of the babies whom I knew were not yet physically ready to come out into this world.

Twins are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

And so that brings me here now. Rocio and Rocia are in the neonatal intensive care unit with life-supporting tubes attached to their small and frail bodies. Each of them weighs around 1kg, as light as a 1 liter bottle of water.

It hurts us to see them enduring pokes from various tests and physical pains from being attached to several tubes at such a young age. They have strong brains and hearts, but their severely immature lungs have been giving them problems. One of the twins almost died twice because of struggling with low oxygen in her body. They are being continuously being given medications and oxygen support while their lungs are continuing to develop outside my womb. Babies born at 29 weeks have 90% chance of survival, so we are not losing hope.

We went to the best hospital to increase their chances of survival, but it has drained our family's savings and insurance funds as quickly as how water flows from a high pressure faucet.

From the moment the twins were conceived, I knew in my heart that they are meant to live, coming from parents who were told that that because of our reproductive health problems, conceiving a child naturally, let alone twins, would be difficult and that our case of being pregnant with twins was "one in a million."

Please help us provide for Rocio's and Rocia's medical needs to help them live, as much as they are also showing us how strongly they are fighting for their lives. On behalf of our twins, Rocio and Rocia, we are asking for your help. The estimated cost for each child is $30,000 or P1.5 million.

Please help us spread this fundraising campaign. Thank you for your support and prayers.

Gaining Weight Despite Some Setbacks

Update posted by Michelle Lamoste at 04:55 pm

The twins have both gained weight in the last two weeks. Both have been receiving intravenous nutrients and breastmilk. Rocia is 100 grams heavier while Rocio has gained back her birth weight. Both are still on ventilatory support. Rocio had a seizure on January 5 and was promptly tested for. . . . .

  • You and my sister in law have the same situation and I know for sure your babies will be ok because my twin nephews are now almost two and they are very adorable. They stayed at the NICU for 2 months until they are finally home. God bless you and your babies
