We are the robotics team ASAP from the German International School in Cape Town and have been participating at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition for years. This is a worldwide robotics competition, with 40.000 teams and over 320.000 participants. For this competition, every team has to build and program a robot from scratch out of standard Lego pieces. This robot has to then complete as many objectives as it can on a predefined playing field within 2 and a half minutes. In addition to this, every team has to present a scientific project in which they identify and solve a problem that corresponds to that season's theme.

This season's theme is “Into Orbit – looking at how to meet the challenges of space travel”. For this, our team's project idea was it to create rocket fuel (methalox) on the surface of Mars with existing resources, so that we can send our astronauts back to Earth again in the (hopefully) near future. In our school's chemistry lab, we reconstructed the Martian atmosphere and were actually able to create rocket fuel!

In 2018, there were a total of 135 Teams that participated at the FIRST LEGO League in South Africa. There is a regional competition in every Province of South Africa (there are two in Gauteng). Our first competition this season were the Regionals here in Cape Town on the 3rd of November. There, we managed to qualify for Nationals in Johannesburg, which is a two day long competition (30th November to the 1st December). After a nerve racking 48 hours, we managed to take the win and came first in the whole of South Africa, beating 30 other teams!

We've now been invited to the FIRST Championship in Detroit, where the best of the best of each country will be competing for 4 days straight (24-27 April 2019). This is the final competition in the FLL, where we will be competing against over 100 other teams.

Our preparations for the FLL World Championship in Detroit are in full swing. Help us cover the costs for our flights, accomodation, food and transport by donating any amount!
