Campaign Story
In Abi's own words:
"A few years back I was diagnosed with herniated discs that resulted to two surgeries of my lower back. Through God’s grace, these surgeries were successful and I recovered well. However, last year, I was diagnosed with another illness which is spinal spondylosis secondary to degenerative discs and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) of the whole spine. OPLL is a condition where the posterior ligament that connects and stabilizes the bones of the spine changes into bone or bone-like substance. Because of this illness, I have spinal compression on my C3-C4 vertebrae level. Sadly, this has progressed and I have started to experience muscle weakness and loss of balance. After having undergone MRI, it was found out that additional levels (C4-C5 and C5-C6) were impacted causing myelopathy. Myelopathy is a very serious condition that if untreated can lead to significant and permanent nerve damage including paralysis. I was advised that immediate surgery is required in order to prevent this from happening. The doctor will perform anterior cervical corpectomy to decompress the cord. Initial rough estimate provided by the doctor for the total cost is more or less Php 2.2 million (or around US$ 42,000) including the procedure, plates, hospitalization, doctor’s fee, among others."
We are a group of Abi's friends trying to help raise fund for her surgery. As she described, her condition is serious that immediate surgery is needed or she might get paralyzed. Abi is a very positive person who never hesitates to make fun of herself just to make others happy. The last we saw her, she had a brace on her neck to prevent any sudden movement that might lead to her paralysis from the neck down. Even then, she had a smile on her face while explaining why she had the brace on.
We're appealing to your kind heart to help us help Abi. You have our utmost gratitude for any amount you can contribute, for sharing this campaign, and of course, for your prayer for Abi's recovery.
