Formål

Indsamlingens formål er at give familien Otieno en chance for at ændre deres liv, ved at starte en lille 'second-hand' tøjforretning som kan supplere deres meget lave indkomst. Såfremt indsamlingen bliver meget succesfuld vil familien supplere forretningen med en symaskine til reparation af tøj.

Familien Otieno

Her er Linet og Peter med deres to børn, Ryan på 4 år og Terry-Blessings på 2 år. Peter er 32 år og forsørger hele familien ved at arbejde 12 timer hver nat som sikkerhedsvagt i et privat hus. Hver måned får han udbetalt 6.000 shilling, svarende til 378 danske kroner. Linet på 22 er arbejdssøgende, men med den høje arbejdsløshed i Kenya har det lange udsigter. Familien betaler 3.000 shilling i husleje for det ene rum som de alle sammen bor i. Det giver dem et månedligt rådighedsbeløb på 3.000 shilling, eller 189 danske kroner.

Deres ældste barn, Ryan, har en sygdom i lungerne som lægerne har forsøgt at behandle med medicin mod lungebetændelse. Behandlingen virkede ikke men det koster 1.000 shilling blot at få lungerne undersøgt ved en speciallæge, så familien ved ikke hvad han fejler. Linet frygter at han har kræft. Han kan ikke trække vejret samtidig med at han spiser, og når han sover er én af forældrene vågne for at sikre sig at han trækker vejret. På en halv meters afstand kan man tydeligt høre at hans vejrtrækning er dårlig og anstrengt. Ryan går ikke i skole fordi det koster 500 shilling hver måned, så han må vente til næste år, siger Linet.

Familien spiser som regel hver dag, men sommetider har de ikke råd til paraffin eller kul til deres komfur og så nøjes de med at hvile sig og drikke vand. Det er tydeligt at børnene hverken får den rette eller nok næring.

Purpose

The purpose of this campaign is to give the Otieno family a chance to change their lives by starting a small 'second hand' clothing store that can complement their very low income. If the collection becomes very successful the family will complement the shop with a sewing machine to repair clothes.

Partial goals

The Otieno family

Here are Linet and Peter with their two children, 4 year-old Ryan and 2 year-old Terry-Blessings. Peter is 32 years old and provides for the entire family by working 12 hours night-shifts as a security guard in a private house. Every month he receives 6,000 shillings, equivalent to 59USD. Linet is 22 and unemployed, but with the high unemployment-rate in Kenya, finding a job is hard. The family pays 3,000 shillings for rent for the one room they all live in. This gives them a monthly availability of 3,000 shillings, or 29USD.

Their oldest child, Ryan, has a disease in the lungs which the doctors have tried to treat with drugs for pneumonia. The treatment did not work, but it costs 1,000 shillings just to get the lungs examined by a specialist, so the family does not know what his ilness is. Linet fears that he has cancer. He cannot breathe while he is eating, and when he is asleep, one of the parents stay awake to make sure he breathes. At half a metres distance you can clearly hear that his breathing is bad and strained. Ryan does not go to school because it costs 500 shillings every month so he has to wait until next year, Linet says.

The family usually eats everyday, but sometimes they cannot afford paraffin or coal for their stove, so instead they stay in their small room resting and drinking water. It is clear that the children neither get the proper nor enough nutrition.
