As many of you know, I have been living in Kampala for the past seven months setting up my latest project, Aniye, an inclusive grassroots movement of refugees and international volunteers. Our traveling school project works from grassroots level, reaching every community who invite us, sharing our knowledge and expertise and encouraging refugees to organize, initiate and improve their lives.

This project has received amazing support from the communities and is growing in such a way that I am now ready to move onto the next phase of establishing it as an NGO. Together with a dream team of wonderful African activists, we have started the process. Our organizational vision is: To identify the root causes of the social crises leading to discrimination, poverty and forced migration in East Africa and promote effective solutions both to those problems and the people affected by them.

Unfortunately, after devoting all my personal funds to the first months of this project I have come to a point in my finances where I can no longer continue to run this project without financial support – and that is why I have created this Gogetfunding!

With your support I will officially register Aniye as an NGO, which will allow us to sustain our activism work, and create a website which will form a stage of advocacy as well as expose our work and the refugee communities’ stories to a broader, global audience. I would also like to extend our work and start visiting the many refugee camps that are all over Uganda, where refugees are living in very harsh conditions. All of these activities require traveling costs for me and volunteers, materials such as games and stationary for the children, electronic equipment and other various supplies for teaching and capacity building workshops.

I am hoping to reach a goal of $8500 USD to cover these start-up costs and keep the project going for at least 7 months until the NGO will be registered and initial external funding is obtained. A portion of the funds will also go towards my living expenses, so I can stay here and continue this work. Some of you may find it quite exciting to learn that I have grown up a lot in these past months and for the first time in my life I am now the proud owner of a couch, with plans for a second-hand minifridge to join my home in the near future!
