Background

The sight of stray dogs and cats wandering around the streets and neighbourhoods is a familiar one in most cities. As of April 2017, there is an estimated average of 300,000 strays in a Malaysian city. The stray animal population in Malaysia is an ongoing issue, and there is a regular stream of news reports about stray animals being hurt or rescued. Many kind souls are willing to help feed and rescue strays, however there are those who prefer the less humane approach of handling strays by killing them. This is due to the absence of compassion and awareness on the destitute conditions of these strays.

A female cat or dog is capable of producing up to three litters of kittens/puppies per year with an average litter size of six kittens/puppies each time. For every litter born, there is a chance that one of them will end up on the street. To solve the issue of overpopulation of strays, neutering is seen as the best solution. An abundance of strays can lead to a widespread of fleas, rabies, infections to you and your pets. Many complain about bad odor in their compound coming from waste products of strays. On top of that, strays can be wild and potentially cause harm or even steal your pet’s food.

About Us

StraysReborn is a crowdfunding campaign established by a team of engineering students from Taylor’s University Malaysia as a part of an assignment for the Business Skills for Engineers module. Our aim is to reduce the number of strays in our area through a spay/neuter and rehome program. We plan to achieve this aim by raising funds primarily for spaying/neutering on behalf of a stray animal shelter and also spread awareness for animal welfare. Hence, we have partnered with Second Chance Animal Society to attain this goal

.

Our Partner

Second Chance Animal Society was registered on 23rd Jan 2013 with Registry of Society, Shah Alam in Selangor (Registration No. PPM-010-10-10012013). The society is registered as a non-profit organisation and managed by a group of seven committee members. They started with 12 rescued puppies in September 2009 and today, Second Chance shelter houses more than 500 dogs, a big percentage of them were dumped and/or abandoned and being taken in to the shelter.

Your kind contributions and donations are significant in helping these strays live a better life. As a token of appreciation, we will send a handmade postcard filled with love (and cute animals!) for every transaction of USD 25 (~MYR 100) made. The rewards will be distributed to respective donors by February 2019. Please note that we have a limited number of postcards to give out as the production and shipping costs are fully covered by our team. We hope this campaign appeals to the public, especially pet-lovers (like you!).

Budget Overview

The team will be collaborating with Second Chance Animal Shelter which is located in Hulu Langat, Selangor, Malaysia to raise funds for the neuter/spay program for stray dogs. The team plans to raise a total of RM4000 / $960. The budget overview is as shown below:

Neutering of 1 male dog = RM150 / $36

Neutering of 1 female dog = RM200 / $48

An average cost of neutering 1 male and 1 female dog = (RM150 + RM200) / 2

= RM175 / $42

The charges which goes to the crowdfunding website (Gogetfunding) = 6.9% x RM4000

= RM276 / $66

Approximate number of male and female dogs can be neutered = (RM4000 - RM276) / RM175

= 21.28

~ 21 strays

With the budget of RM4000 / $960, it will be sufficient to neuter/spay approximately 21 dogs.
