Dear friends, acquaintances, and hopefully, the many of you whom we do not know personally, I'm reaching out to all of you because we are connected by one common thread: David Thomas, also known to some of us as DT, our abbreviation for David Edgar Cowan Thomas.

After the second of July, which might be nearly a month ago as you read this, we have lost touch with David. Upon further enquiries with the Canadian authorities, close associates and representatives of his family we have confirmed that David has passed away unexpectedly in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, in the place where he was residing of late. We are now in the midst of preparing for a trip between the 6th and 8th of August where we will meet the family representatives as well as organise an informal memorial gathering for his acquaintances, associates and students in Ho Chi Minh. This memorial shall take place on the evening of 7th August at a place to be announced soon.

There have been questions about how he passed, and I understand, being far and removed from the affable memory of David, we would like to look back and to place detail into the unexpected and regrettable fact. Please be assured that his family, whose privacy of this matter we choose to respect will help us decide how these details may be shared.

I prefer to remember him by his values, his visionary approach, how he shared this wisdom with us. As David wrote: “we are quantifying that which is unquantifiable, someday we will build without walls"

We have thought it would be sensible to set up a webpage which allows for comment and contributions, the funds collected will be passed in full, and directly to David's family representatives when we meet them on the 6th August 2018 in Ho Chi Minh.

  • I’d like to take the opportunity to that you all for the tremendous amount of love, admiration and respect you have shown in regards to my dad and his passing. I am overwhelmed with seeing how much he meant to so many people. In these days that follow as I come to terms with the loss It will be of comfort knowing so many of you are also feeling the same loss. My dad loved what he did. From my earliest memories he always was focused on architecture and design. It was his passion and passing on his talent and skills to other was his true calling. He will be greatly missed and a deep void has been left. Thank you all for your kind words and outpouring support. I am at a loss for words. I will never be able to fully express my gratitude. I know those Of you who have worked with him, studied with him, will now be able to carry on with his torch. Thank you all so much again.

  • The trip to the last city where David stayed at reminded me of a passage that I had came across before, from the last paragraphs of "The Voices of Silence" by André Malraux. "In that house of shadows where Rembrandt still plies his brush, all the illustrious Shades, from the artists of the caverns onwards, follow each movement of the trembling hand that is drafting for them a new lease of survival—or of sleep. And that hand whose waverings in the gloom are watched by ages immemorial is vibrant with one of the loftiest of the secret yet compelling testimonies to the power and the glory of being Man." David has joined the ranks of the illustrious Shades, and whether he finds a new lease of life, or of sleep, depends on the trembling hands of all his students.
