Walking Autism is a journey to educate, empower, support, and provide awareness and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorder through Kenya and the African continent, by walking long distance, using camels as the baggage carriers.
As the founder of Walking Autism and on the spectrum myself, I created the project as a way to do what I could to help better the lives of others, based on my own experiences.
I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at age 13, but only truly really understanding at age 27, due to the lack of awareness and understanding of autism in Kenya at the time. I spent a large chunk of my life never really understanding anything about my own autism or even myself. The knowledge I have personally gained over the years, and how it has changed my own life, inspired me to want to do something to improve the lives, services and opportunities of children and adults on the spectrum here in Kenya.
Having previously undertaken a week long 150km walk through Northern Kenya in 2014, and a month long 450kms walk around the circumference of Mt. Kenya in 2016, 'Summit to Sea’ is a 2000km, 5 month long walk within Kenya.
Focusing on impoverished and rural areas, where there is little to a very basic understanding and very little support of autism, I will be giving talks, workshops and consultations in towns along the route. My support partners include Autism Awareness Kenya (AAK), Special Education Professionals (SEP) and working with the Early Assessment Resource Centre's (EARC's) within Kenya.
Combining my love of travel, walking and camels, I wanted to do something out of the ordinary that would empower and benefit a multitude of others, as well as do what I love.
Due to the time in mapping out this project and working on logistics, I haven’t been able to devote my time as much as I would’ve liked to working on it; However, with your generosity, the ‘Summit to Sea’ walk will happen very soon
