My name is Gabriel Palacios, I'm a civil construction technician and I live in Caracas, Venezuela.

Gabriel Palacios

In 1989 I was diagnosed with Stargardt's disease, or juvenile macular dystrophy. This hereditary ocular disorder is characterized by early degeneration of the central area of the retina, affecting the photoreceptor cells responsible for visual acuity. The result is the progressive loss of central vision, which we use when reading, watching television and observing details.

This health condition implies significant limitations in my personal and work development. Simple actions such as using an ATM, differentiating public transportation routes, reading a medical prescription or a product label, recognizing people, filling out a form or simply writing, are very difficult and involve a great visual effort.

Up to now there is no known cure or approved treatment; However, there are tools that have allowed me to lead my life as normally as possible. For example, magnifying glasses, smartphones and accessibility software.

Assistive devices

Currently my visual ability has been reduced even more due to Presbyopia, which decreases the effectiveness of my assistive devices, causes me discomfort when using them and limits my autonomy. I often suffer from exhaustion in the eyes and severe headaches.

In the search for alternative aids, I found an electronic glasses that offer people with low vision, to see, to have mobility and carry out independently all activities of daily life. This is an advanced and personalized medical device with clinical tests that support it; registered in the FDA and EUDAMED and inspected by the health system of Canada.

eSight

With the eSight I'll have the possibility to experience the well-being and independence that means to be able to see. Unfortunately, it is not available in Venezuela and the manufacturer's closest location is in the USA. In order to acquire the electronic glasses, it is necessary to travel for an interview with the authorized agent, perform adaptation tests and receive training to use it.

In my country, the very serious humanitarian and economic crisis due to hyperinflation, in addition to the severe restrictions on the free use and acquisition of foreign currency, make impossible to finance all expenses related to travel and the purchase of equipment through my own means.

For these reasons I have decided to start this fundraiser; having faith and certainty that human values know no limits and their kind actions surpass hopes.

I appreciate the generosity of those who can donate. Regardless of the amount, everything adds up.

Also, spreading this cause is very helpful. The more people who know, I will have more chances to reach the goal.

In case of exceeding the amount raised, I will allocate the surplus funds to the help of other people with low vision, who like me need financial assistance.

As the eSight slogan says ...

"Everyone deserves to see"
