A Little History

It is 1941. As the World War II looms in Europe, and around the world, India is fighting for its independence. While the British Raj in India is seeking for its clean and efficient exit strategy, a young farmer walks briskly through the jungle somewhere in south India. Unfazed by the rattle snakes, the scorpions and horror ghost stories he had heard, he briskly walks across the jungle towards a light shining through a small hut where his children are awaiting his arrival. The hut and another one next to it are the only habitation in this jungle with no human souls across several kilometers. As he walks he has a single objective of his life. To see to it that his children are well taken care of, that they have sufficient money to buy food 3 times in a day and that they receive the best education.

Then came 1947, the time of India-Pakistan partition and as families were urged to migrate and go where they wanted to between India and Pakistan, he decided to stay back with his family in India because he loved his country so much.

That was my grandfather, Abdul Lateef Khan, a God fearing man. Someone who taught his kids that doing right was the only way even though it may need you to lead a life of poverty. The principles what he taught my father are the ones I try to live by no matter where I am in the world, never forgetting where my humble beginnings are.

What Exists Today

Now in 2018 as I visit what was once just two small huts, I see a sprawling population with 60 small homes. The village was recently named APJ Abdul Kalam Nagar after the name of India's late President. As I walk through the same footsteps, I realize how his family of 9 children have survived all odds in what was once a hostile environment.

Today Raheemabad with over a 250 people of population is still struggling as it is in dire need of a medical facility. Not only Raheemabad but a total of 9 surrounding villages lack proper medical facilities. The nearest medical hospital is 15 kms away and the only way to get there is either walk, or take a private vehicle if one can afford. Public transportation literally doesn't exists. There are no metros, trains, buses or Ambulances that one can call. Combined that with poor road connectivity and immediate medical facility in emergency is virtually non existant.
