‘Looking for Albion’, follows a group of young, unemployed British men as they journey across the UK attempting to understand their social and political identity after Brexit.

What is the project?

We want to make a film which processes a shared reaction to an incredibly confusing political event. Combining a research-based approach with cinematic fiction, we aim to create a kind of visual crisis which reflects the campaign - in which fact and fantasy were difficult to distinguish from one another. Through following two protagonists in their search for what England might be, we want to capture this world as it disappears.

Who are we?

We’re a combination of remain voters, leave voters, non-voters, students and artists from London.

What have you already done?

We travelled around the UK filming on the big red anti-Brexit bus you might have seen on the news. We’ve also interviewed a number of people, ranging from academics to politicians to figures of pop culture.

We’ve already had interest in the project from Sir Patrick Stewart, Natalie Bennett of the Green Party, academic Andrew Gardner (UCL), Madeleina Kay (European Supergirl) and are considering approaching figures such as Al Murray.

What will the supporters get back?

Our film aims to find clarity in a democratic process with ingrained contradictions. It is an ongoing project of truth-seeking, making a modest attempt to alleviate confusion.

By supporting our film you show solidarity with those who have lost hope in our current political climate. You will be helping us give opportunities to young British men not in education or employment; and encouraging cinematography and directing by women and non-binary people.

You will also be showing support for hybrid arts disciplines - funding opportunities are limited for projects like this, especially as the work sits somewhere between visual art, performance, documentary and feature film.

We will supply everyone who contributes with a DVD copy of the work, and of course, an invite to the screening. The film will premiere in the anual Here exhibition of Turin, from the 18th till the 26th of May. the work will then be installed in Goldsmiths Degree Show in June, which is open to the public from the 14th June. We are open to requests for future screenings on installations.

What will you use the money for?

We intend to use the money to cover the production and installation of the film. The key production costs are travel, studio time, equipment and costume. We have a small cast and crew, however travel costs rack up quickly. For example a trip to the Burnham marshes cost £100 in train fares alone. We intend to travel more of the country however the cost of travel is restricive. We have been calling on favours and lifts to try get around as best we can but some financial support would be more than helpful. The costumes so far have cost us more than £300 in materials and labour. Equipment hire etc.

We intend to present the film within an installation both in Turin at the end of May and London at the beginning of June. This will include the rental of a screen (£900), timber (£350), rental or purchase of scaffold (£100-800). Thank you for being interested in our page!
