Hi everyone, I'm Angela Mendoza, 30 years old. I've been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism caused by an autoimmune disease, Grave's Disease last July 2017. I'm on anti-thyroid meds since then to manage my thyroid hormones. I also had thyroid ultrasound that showed I have a small nodule in my left thyroid. I was asked to repeat the ultrasound after 6 months and the result showed that the nodule had doubled in size and it had irregular margins and calcification which were red flags according to my doctor since these were indications of cancer. As advised by my endocrinologist, I had ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy to see if the nodule was really cancerous. The result of the biopsy showed that there were atypical cells found in 6 out of 8 smears from my nodule, which was also an indication of cancer. The official result was "Suspicious for Papillary Thyroid Cancer." I was advised to undergo total thyroidectomy (total removal of the whole thyroid gland) by 4 doctors to avoid the cancer cells from spreading.

Since the result read suspicious, I decided to try herbal medicines that I bought from a popular natural doctor in Tarlac and hoped that it will make this nodule disappear. These medicines were probably the worst tasting medicines I've ever had and I was supposed to take them for a month with special diet for their cancer patients but due to severe diarrhea and vomiting while taking it, I stopped and went back to my endocrinologist and had another ultrasound, my nodule looked almost the same except it increased in height by .1cm and the calcification and irregular margins were clearer than the last. My husband and I decided to push through with what the doctors have advised me, a total thyroidectomy. I started with my anti-thyroid medicine again but this time, I'm taking a higher dosage since my thyroid hormones dropped when I started taking the herbal treatment.

My surgeon talked to me and briefed me about my upcoming surgery. He told me straight that with how my tumor looks, its shape, its margins, the calcification and the atypical cells found in biopsy, It is really Papillary Thyroid Cancer. Bad news but after the initial shock of the news had passed, I calmed myself and decided to just do something about it. I was scheduled for an operation on March 22 to remove my whole thyroid gland. While my age benefits me greatly against this cancer, I still have risk factors that will only be reduced by another procedure and follow up radiation or what they call Radio Active Iodine (RAI). This treatment is used to destroy any thyroid tissue not removed by surgery and cancer cells that have spread in the lymph nodes and other areas. What does this mean financially? Stress! Medical bills for my upcoming operation, pre-operation procedures, doctor's visits, consultations with specialists and laboratory works as well as my recent biopsy procedure are continuously piling up and my health insurance is only covering a small portion of the expenses. In addition to this I am sure there will be a slew of medicines and at home recovery items needed.

With that said I am doing something I don't normally do. I am asking for help. The financial burden of cancer absolutely terrifies me. We budget everything. Sacrifice wherever needed and are working hard to be debt free but we didn't budget for cancer. Honestly I wasn't even sure how much to ask for but I am putting it all out there and knowing that God can perform miracles. We have never been without and even in the toughest times He has always provided for us.

Thank you for your continued support and love. Prayers, text messages and phone calls have just as much value if you aren't able to help financially. This cancer has no idea the warrior it is about to meet!
