It is with a saddened heart that I write this letter. My dad has kidney failure and his kidney function is at 17% but dropping every month. His specialist confirmed that h will need to go on dialysis soon but a kidney transplant is inevitable and this needs to urgently happen.

There is both good news and bad news. The good news is that my mother has decided to be his kidney donor. Both their blood types are is match. There are further tests and cross matching that needs to take place but can only be done within 3-6 months of the transplant.

The bad news is that my dads’ medical aid (Discovery) ) will not cover expenses of the procedure as there is 12 month waiting period (current existing condition) which expires in July 2018.

Due to financial constraints over the past few years, previous medical aid had to be cancelled, and this year August only was my dad able to join the medical aid again and unfortunately Discovery has an exclusion clause because the kidney condition is an existing problem and it had to be disclosed.

My mom had written a letter to Discovery asking for them to waiver the waiting period explaining our situation or even if they could pay for half of the expenses of the entire procedure and we can try and raise the balance of funds, but they have declined approval twice.

We estimate the kidney transplant procedure can cost anything between R500 000 to R700 000, but would like to raise a maximum of R1M to also cover cost of medications and other treatments until the medical aid kicks in which is August 2018. The dialysis alone will cost between R40 000 – R50 000 a month until he can do the transplant. None of this is covered by the medical aid until August 2018.

According to Science Daily, “more than 2 million people die prematurely every year because they cannot access life-saving kidney failure treatment.”

My dad has the opportunity to have this life-saving operation, but the funds are an obstacle at this stage. My family is asking for a donation, any amount which your heart desires, to help us raise the money to do this procedure. I am also asking that you would please help us in reaching more people within your contacts for more donations.

As his daughter, please help save his life.
