Campaign Story
As of July 4, 2017, we have reached our goal of purchasing bus passes for 18 students to meet their tutor once a week for eight weeks! Thank you so much to those of you who read our campaign and who have donated. We are so appreciative of your generosity and compassionate spirit in assisting these young people.

Hello!
We would like your support for a brand new, very special program serving newly-arrived refugee youth from South Sudan and Syria. Dr. Amanda Godley, Professor of English Education & Language, Literacy and Culture at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, and Christine Tapu, Pittsburgh Public School ESL Teacher at Brashear High School, along with the support of the University of Pittsburgh Honors College, have initiated a summer tutor program for high school students who have been forced to leave their country because of war and persecution. Some of these young people have little formal schooling and need summer tutoring to retain the content that Christine taught them in the spring.
Amanda and Christine have recruited and trained over 25 Pitt students and community members who are committed to weekly tutoring and mentoring at two locations in the West End and on the North Side. The tutors and students will meet at the local Carnegie libraries and take field trips to learn more about our great city!
We are in need of funds to purchase bus passes for 18 students* to travel weekly to the library and participate in the field trips for 8 weeks this summer. Our goal is to raise $1,008. Will you please consider donating:
- $112 = Two students' bus pass for eight weeks
- $56 = One student's bus pass for eight weeks
- $14 = Two weeks of bus passes for one student
- Any donation welcome!
Thank you for your consideration!
*Note: As of July 3 we have matched 18 students with tutors (instead of 17 students) so our goal has increased.

Shannon, You do such amazing things for your community! Wish I could say I had anything to do with the kind human being you've become, but since I can't, I'll just be grateful I am in your life at all!
