This is Mamta. I met her family on a trip to India seven years ago. Mamta lives in a small village in Northern India and is eight months pregnant with twins. Knowing twins often come early, she is expecting them any day now!

But for Mamta and other women from poor families in India, childbirth can quickly turn into tragedy. Three weeks ago Mamta's sister Samta was due to give birth to a healthy baby girl after four years of trying for a child. Samta and her husband knew better than to go to their rural, government hospital where the conditions are unsanitary and women frequently lose their babies because of the poor quality of care. But money was tight and so they went to a small, private clinic which was cheaper than their first choice hospital. On the day of Samta's delivery family and friends waited anxiously to hear how mother and baby were doing. But the news was devastating. Samta was in critical condition after a botched delivery and the baby girl was dead. Although perfectly healthy at birth, the little girl had been killed by an untrained assistant who was performing the C-section while following the instructions of an elderly doctor who could no longer see properly. Our hearts are broken for Samta who is still in recovery, and Mamta has grieved deeply for her sister's loss.

Mamta knows that without help, she cannot afford good quality care for her own delivery, and is facing a hospital bill for twice the amount because she is expecting twins.

Please help to avoid another tragedy by helping to raise enough money to enable Mamta to get proper medical care at a reputable hospital where she can deliver her twins safely.

(Please see the "updates" tab above for more information on when and how the money will be spent and updates on Mamta)

Update on Mamta and the twins

Update posted by Wendy Hanson at 12:45 pm

On Tuesday of this week, Mamta officially entered her 9th month of pregnancy. She was told after she entered the 8th month that she should expect the twins at any time (as twins tend to arrive early) so the clock is well and truly ticking now and she is readying. . . . .

When the money is being sent to Mamta

Update posted by Wendy Hanson at 03:55 pm

As mentioned in our previous update, half of the estimated expenses for Mamta's birth will be required by the hospital when Mamta is admitted and the remaining balance will be required when she leaves the hospital. Mamta's due date is the end of June/early July, but because Mamta is carrying. . . . .

How the money will be spent

Update posted by Wendy Hanson at 03:04 pm

The facility above is called Jain Hospital and Nursing Home in a town called Pehowa and is where Mamta hopes to deliver her twins with the help of this campaign. It has a good reputation for safe births, while remaining less costly than bigger hospitals in larger towns. In India,. . . . .
