Orangutan Wildlife Centre

Wildlife Centre Jogja in Indonesia.

Is a non-profit organisation that rehabilitates animals such as orangutans, gibbons, sunbears, eagles, parrots (many types of birds), turtles, crocodiles and many many more, that have lost their homes due to deforestation or have been rescued from illegal trade. It's has been eye-opening working here, just to see the destructive nature of humans and their negative influence on animals. But aside that it has also been an honour to work alongside such beautiful and intelligent animals. It has also been amazing to see the care and love that goes into saving and improving these animals lives.

However... and it's a big However... This sanctuary desperately needs money! The workers here give everything they can to the animals, even working for 7 months without pay when times got tough. The aim is to rehabilitate as many animals as possible and send them back into the wild, however due to laws and regulations of the country this can take a long time so funds are needed to keep the animals healthy during this time. Also some animals have been too domesticated from being kept as pets for so long, so unfortunately will not be able to be released, so the aim is to build these animals amazing enclosures to compensate for their loss of freedom. However this all requires money which the sanctuary in short, doesn't have, due to the economic status of the country. A little money will go a long way and all of it will go to enriching the animals lives.

At the moment we are building the sunbear a new, bigger and better enclosure as the one she is in at the moment just isn't big enough for her.

The next plans are to build a playground for the orangutans, so they can stretch they're legs, play around and just behave like an oraguntan for a couple hours each day.

Also one of the orangutans is ready for release (Ucok and her baby Mungil) however this cannot happen until they have money. This is because it costs money to transport them and also due to the law she has to be DNA tested to see what type of orangutan she is so she can be released into the correct area. So unfortunately, until they have the money she will remain at the centre instead of being free in the wild.

I have a huge love for all animals and heaeung about how these animals have been treated before they go here just breaks my heart. Any donation will go such a long way and will be extremely appreciate by me, the workers and most importantly the animals!

Ucok's Story: (Female, Borneo Orang-utan)

“Unfortunately life hasn't always been happy for me. I was rescued from a restaurant in Solo, Indonesia. I was kept illegally alongside another orang-utan in a small, cramped cage as entertainment for restaurant visitors. I was unable to eat a healthy diet and was constantly exposed to cigarette smoke. But my new life started in 2011 when the staff at the Wildlife Rescue Centre brought me to Yogyakarta. I now have plenty of room to play and the animal keepers ensure I have a healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegetables”

Ucok is a beautiful primate with a huge heart. Her stunning brown eyes are so striking that she is affectionately known at the centre as 'beautiful eyes.' She had a baby girl with Joko and we named this beautiful baby orang-utan - Mungil (the tiny one) in 2013. It was hard process for WRC Jogja staffs to make Ucok want to accept and take care of her baby. At beginning, Ucok didn’t have the maternal instinct. But now, she really loves her baby.
