Minmahaw School, Maesot, Thailand, is seeking your help for our academic year.

Minmahaw School has no major funding organisation, and is supported by the generosity of individual Burmese and International donors. All donations are directed towards full education and living support for the school’s students each year. All teachers at Minmahaw are self-funded volunteers and do not draw a stipend for their work here.

About Minmahaw School

We are a boarding school based in a village suburb of the town of Mae Sot, Thailand, 500 km NW from Bangkok on the Thai/Myanmar border. Since 2009 we have offered an immersive English post-grade-10 program for Burmese students who have a proven background of high academic achievement. All our students, however, are disadvantaged educationally, economically and/or socially, and represent the diverse ethnicities of Myanmar. Each year we accept about 50 students who are between 17 and 23 years of age and who come from Refugee Camps, displaced migrant labouring families or from inside Myanmar. Our students do not pay for their accommodation or tuition.

Our main program is of one year duration and provides an immersive English environment delivering an upper high school level curriculum. We teach English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Art, Craft, Public Health and First Aid and vocational studies. Underpinning all subjects is teaching which reflects ‘International best practice style’, that is: ‘contemporary /experiential education’ and along with English, our main aim is to develop thinking skills and confidence – the school’s pledge to the students is: ‘Minmahaw will teach you how to learn’

We also run a second year teacher training program to satisfy the need presented by our students and their communities. Due to the success of this course, Minmahaw Schoolprovides teachers to a number of local migrant schools and prepares students to take educational responsibility for schools in their own community.

At Minmahaw, students have a very full timetable as, apart from teaching hours, they look after themselves and their living and learning environments. The day starts at 6am for groups who are rostered on cooking, garening and cleaning duties. Lessons begin at 8.00 am and finish at 3.50 pm, Monday to Friday. After school there is more cleaning and cooking plus garden work as our students strive to grow as much of their food as they can. Those with free time play football, cane ball and other activities in the open area next to the school. There is Night Study from 7.00 pm until 9.30 pm on five nights each week. Night study is considered part of the school day and is compulsory for students. We are a mobile-phone-free zone, except at weekends.

After graduating from Minmahaw our students will proceed in a variety of directions:

  • Some will be accepted directly into university. Each year the Asian University for Women accepts two or more of our best young ladies on full scholarships into their 4 year Bachelor degree program
  • Most will try for scholarships to study and sit for the General Educational Development (GED) exams which, if they pass, will enable them to apply to international (i.e. non Myanmar) universities
  • Many will continue on to the teacher training program, with a view to returning to their homes and working in their community’s schools

Even though the immediate emergency is over for the 2016-2017 academic year, every year it is a struggle to fully fund the school. We are making many concessions to minimize our costs and are grateful for your generous support. As we continue to seek secure funding to educate young students. . . . .

  • This donation is designated to Minmahaw School in honor of Ngwe Sin Phyo, a former student and teacher at MS, who is now attending Beloit College in Wisconsin, USA. I consider her my "Host Daughter", and she wanted to contribute to MS in lieu of a dinner celebrating her being named to the Dean's List for the Fall 2016 semester. Lovely girl! A suggestion for your website, it would be helpful if the GoGetFunding link could also be found on the Home page/Donate tab on your website.
