Campaign Story
Jolene Masson from Shetland was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1984, at 7 years old, at a time when MS in children was unheard of.
She has experienced physical disability including loss of power in her legs, making walking extremely difficult or impossible at times. Also the loss of power in her arms making the simplest of tasks challenging. With years of nerve damage she suffers from what she can only describe as the feeling of "pins and needles" in both her feet, which is constant and although on medication to help dampen the feeling she is still aware of it.
Jolene is planning to go to Mexico to undergo Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) to help halt the progression of her MS, in December 2016.
The treatment will involve chemotherapy to completely destroy her immune system before rebuilding it with her own, previously stored, stem cells. The treatment isn't without risk but it's a risk worth taking to hopefully end the 33 years of her suffering from the effects and uncertainty of this progressive condition.
The total budgeted cost will be around £70,000. The cost of the treatment alone is £40,000 with travel to Mexico and accommodation an additional cost. (Jolene will be in Mexico for a total of 5 weeks to undergo the treatment). Aftercare involves 5 Rutuximab infusions and will cost £5,000 plus travel and accommodation costs from the very north of Scotland to the private facility in England to receive this care.
Any donation received is greatly appreciated.
