SCROLL DOWN FOR INDONESIAN TRANSLATION - BAHASA INDONESIA DI BAWAH!

My name is Kartini, I’m from Europe and living in Indonesia since 2009. Through this fundraising campaign, I wish to talk to you about something that is furry, stripy and has long whiskers. No, don’t worry, I won’t tell you about my cat (though she’s adorable!). Instead I wish to talk to you about Leony and Eva, two beautiful female Sumatran tigers.

Leony and Eva were living in a private home in Jakarta and an illegal zoo in West Java respectively. They were both rescued by the West Java Department of Natural Resources Management in collaboration with Animal Sanctuary Trust Indonesia (ASTI), a non-profit organization which rescues, rehabilitates and releases endangered wild animals displaced by either habitat destruction (e.g. forest fires) or trafficking. ASTI is based in Bogor, West Java, right outside Jakarta on Java island.

Wildlife trafficking is a huge business in Indonesia, resulting in countless numbers of endangered animals being caught by poachers and ending up in illegal markets (including for medicinal drugs) or being kept as pets. Sadly, tigers are not spared from these highly profitable criminal activities! In April 2016 the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Global Tigers Forum stated that while the global tiger population had increased for the first time in a century, the number of tigers in Indonesia had unfortunately continued to decrease due to rampant deforestation (notably for oil palm plantations) and trafficking. Today it is estimated that there are only about 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, which makes the Sumatran tiger a ‘Critically Endangered’ species on the brink of extinction.

When I was at ASTI, I had the chance to see and get close to Leony and Eva, and was instantly impressed by the majestic beauty and powerful energy of these creatures. It contrasted so much with their past story and made me wonder once again: “how can such animals emanate so much power by their own presence, and yet be so vulnerable to the irresponsible action of humans?” These noble animals should be roaming in their natural habitat in the forests of Sumatra, not spending their lives in cages or enclosures.

While many other organizations are working on the important aspects of habitat protection/restoration, law enforcement and community involvement for tiger conservation, ASTI works directly with trafficked tigers and is determined to return Leony and Eva to the wild. To this end, ASTI is constructing a rehabilitation enclosure for the tigers, and is working on a strategy for their future relocation to a suitable facility in Sumatra where they will receive final rehabilitation before release.

There is still however a long way to go to prepare Leony and Eva for their new life, and in the meantime ASTI needs support to start to rehabilitate them and to maintain them in a healthy and strong condition, while taking care of more than 70 other rescued animals currently staying at ASTI (including Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, gibbons, leopard cats and lots of birds from Java and Papua). This is why I am now launching this fundraising campaign to help Annette Elizabeth Pipe and Andy Sean Kindangen (co-founders of ASTI) and their dedicated team to continue providing food (a tiger needs on average 5kg of meat per day) and medical care for Leony and Eva. The goal is to raise US$ 13,200 for one full year, so your generous support is highly welcomed and appreciated!

With US$ 20, one tiger can be taken care of for one day

With US$ 140, one tiger can be taken care of for one week

With US$ 550, one tiger can be taken care of for one month

Can you help ASTI to take care of Leony and Eva while they prepare them for a second chance at life?

By donating, you are not just helping Leony and Eva, but you are contributing to the safeguarding of one of Indonesia’s unique heritages that the world can no longer afford to lose at the hands of poachers and traffickers.

Many thanks in advance for your support, and please spread the word!

Dengan AS$ 20, seekor harimau dapat dirawat selama sehari;
Dengan AS$ 140, seekor harimau dapat dirawat selama seminggu;

Terima kasih banyak atas dukungan anda! Bantulah sebar kampanye ini!
